I was not sure what to write about until I came across a blog post 2 minutes ago.
After clicking the link I immediately saw a pop up for opt ins and a little video pop up in the right hand corner of the screen.
3 seconds later, on clicking the exit button for both, nothing happened. The site loaded too slowly – with my high speed connection – for a click to register in 3 seconds.
I immediately closed the browser. Of course I will never return to the blog. Even if the well-meaning blogger wants to simply grow their list and introduce themselves via video I have only a few minutes to meet and greet and read blog posts and comment on blog posts for each blogger I come across daily. Time is my greatest ally when I use it effectively and my biggest enemy when I squander it.
Based on my experience from a few minutes ago, let’s talk about how to guarantee readers leave your blog quickly, so you can address and avoid doing this stuff.
1: Slow Load Time
The blog I visited loaded so slowly – being weighed down with a littering of elements – that I could not exit the pop up form or pop up video after 3 seconds of clicks. Talk about heavy.
People have no time for slow loading sites in a world of quick loading, lightning fast sites. You are quick, or dead, blog-speed-wise, so if you run a slow loading blog, many readers will leave your blog immediately.
Invest in reputable hosting. Invest in a CDN too. Use a lean, clean blog design and keep things simple by avoiding any overloading with ads, pop ups and other elements.
2: Multiple Pop Up Forms
Every time you use a pop up form you say: “Wait a second. Before you read the content you are here to read, do this.”
It is OK to ask a reader to do 1 thing before they read the content they clicked through to read. But when you ask them to do something else – aka 2 pop ups – you will annoy them almost every time and a high percentage of these annoyed folks will leave your blog immediately, like I did a few minutes ago on seeing the double pop ups I could not close.
Cut it out with multiple pop up forms. Use one pop up if you use any at all. I use zero pop ups now and only used one for a handful of months yet I became an island hopping pro blogger. Heck; I don’t even have an email list, and was never serious about list building.
I bond with my readers by forming strong friendships so my community checks my blog daily or every few days, like checking cnn.com or espn.com. No need to build a list when your readers love what you do and check your blog as a habit. Meaning you can do away with any pop ups used from a desperate, fear-based energy. And you better stop using multiple pop ups.
3: Multi Category Blog
Even a genius tends to focus on one discipline. How can any blogger know 2 or more niches so well that they can offer reliable, in-depth, skillfully-created content? No one can. At least for an individual blog.
The Huffington Post gets away with multiple categories because hundreds of contributors write for the Huffington Post. You are an individual blogger though, or have a small staff of writers.
I exit blogs immediately if I see 2 or more categories. I want a specialist. Not a generalist. Many readers feel the same way.
Do 1 thing. Do it well. Cover 1 topic to keep readers around and to promote your blogging success.

2: Follow a Blogging Mentor
Follow a top blogging tips mentor to get good blogging advice.
Any experienced, professional blogger hellbent on teaching readers how to create helpful content and how to build strong connections with top bloggers is worth a follow.
I’d pick 1-2 blogging mentors, tops. Avoid confusing yourself.
Pro bloggers became pro bloggers by following pro blogger advice.
3: Invest in a Good Blogging Course or eBook

Since money ain’t flowing in for a while anyway it makes sense to blog mainly for fun.
Enjoy the process of:
- learning how to blog
- practicing your blogging skills
- creating helpful content
- building strong connections with bloggers
Lay a rock solid foundation for a thriving blogging career. Have fun helping people through your blog. Money eventually flows to free giving, generous bloggers.
6: Embrace this Truth
Blogging is a skill.
Just like being a doctor or lawyer is a skill, blogging is a skill you need learn, practice and hone over years.
Doctors and lawyers do not take off weeks or months from being a doctor or lawyer during their learning years. Every day counts, with hours of study and practice. Each puts in serious time to master their skill. Ditto for aspiring pro bloggers.
Begin your blogging journey by being all in. Commit 100% to the prior tips. Struggling newbie bloggers often blog in fits and starts, taking off days or weeks or months between blog posts and networking. Big mistake. You need to be ALL IN from Day 1 if you want to succeed with blogging.
