You wanna go crazy with Widgets

WidgetboxI found a great little site tonight called Widgetbox.

In their own words

Widgetbox is a directory and syndication platform for web widgets for blogs and other web pages. Our widgets work with TypePad, WordPress, Blogger, MySpace as well as most other blogs, sidebars or websites. No plug-ins are needed, and they’re free!

it has hundreds of great add ons like page rank, digg and delicious badgets etc for your blog however the best widget for me is the ability to add your own site as a widget. Essentially, the widget allows readers you to list the latest posts from your blog – basically an rss feed scroller however its really simple to use.

I recommend dropping by and scrummaging around til you find something you like :)

How do you reward your good commentators?

I’ve talked alot recently about how good the Get Recent Comments plugin is for wordpress. Similar plugins are available for most blogging standards.

As you know, i removed the ‘no follow’ tag from all comments so that google will follow the websites of those who comment here. I also list the top commentators with a link on every page.

Whilst browsing through other blogs recently i have noticed that a lot of bloggers are abusing the top commentators add on which made me think ‘Is there a way to reward good commentators and not bad ones?’

How are they abusing it?

Well from an ethical point of view i consider them to be abusing it. I’ve found a lot of blogs who have someone in the top commentating list who got there by leaving numerous one line comments. Most of these comments were short, pointless and some of the time even completely …

One Day Silence

Im sure all of you have been felt shocked, hurt and helpless in the last week after the pointless shootings at Virginia Tech. It’s sad that this kind of thing seems to be happening every few years. When i was 16 i remember our teacher telling us about the dunblane killings and we just couldnt comprehend how or why it happened.

In response to the virgina tech incident, the movement One Day Blog Silence has been created. They are encouraging bloggers not to blog on April 30th 2007. The site has a few different banners on their site for your to promote it.

JohnTP inflating Alexa Ranking

I was browsing around MyBlogLog and noticed that John TP had his url stated as http://redirect.alexa.com/redirect?www.johntp.com.

John TP

My first thought that came to my mind was ‘Sneaky!’ but then i quickly remembered how much i hate Alexa. Alexa ranks have always been hugely unreliable from the very start of its existence and i still hold that opinion. I now think that this is a great idea. Im not one for encouraging people to manipulate or enhance their rankings on sites. Quite the opposite infact.

However, the more people who highlight how fallible Alexa is, the more advertising networks will wake up from their Alexa drugged minds and realise that Alexa is a terrible way to rate any website. Notably, Text Link Ads set the publishing rate dependant on a sites Page Rank and Alexa rating.

Alexa results can be artificially inflated using their toolbar, …

Moving your blog to a different directory, domain name or host

If you have visited my blog before you will know that this site used to be on bloggingtips.org. I was lucky enough to secure the .com domain. You can read more about it in my post ‘I’ve Secured my identity‘.

I’ve decided to write a guide to help those who are considering moving their blog to a different position on the web. Be it from
www.domain.com to www.differentdomain.com or from
www.domain.com/blog/ to www.domain.com

Moving your blog to a different area on the web

It doesn’t matter your moving your blog to a different folder on your domain or if your moving your blog to a totally different domain name due to branding or whatever, the process of moving your blog is the same.

The whole process can be dauting to a blogger who has more experience in writing that running a website. It needn’t be though.

The first thing you need to do is …

When should you display your feedburner rss to your readers?

FeedBurner is a tool which allows your blog’s feed to be syndicated and subscribed to more easily to your readers. It really is a fantastic tool and i’ve no doubt you will already know about the site already since so many large blogs use it.

Basically, when you sign up to feedburner, your feed url goes to an easy to read page where readers can add your feed to their chosen rss reader.

As well as tracking stats and giving you other monitoring tools, the feature most blog owners use is displaying a feedburner tool called FeedCount which displays the number of readers you have. It also acts as a link which goes to your feed page.

Here is my feedcount display (ive used the standard colors for this example) :

The count may be different when you read this post however as i write …
