I would like to know is commenting on top commentator blogs helpful in link building. Lately I have seen a drop in my Backlinks due to commenting on top commentator blogs. I am wondering is Google not to happy with sites which use this way to build backlinks.

I am not quite sure if Google penalized Top commentator links. But as for me that uses top commentators plugin, I don't have any problem using it. I don't really care if my PR were penalized because I am using it.

I doubt it's due to your comments. Your backlinks are not going to drop if you're creating more comments. The only reason your backlinks would drop is
a. A site you've got links from is dropped from the Google index
b. A site you've got links on sets their links to use the rel="nofollow" attribute
c. A site you've got links on removes your links.
Are you checking your backlinks via the link: command in the search box or on the Webmaster Tools admin? As the latter will show all backlinks, whereas via the search box it shows (well it used to) just backlinks from sites with a slight importance, although I've found it just seems to show a selection of backlinks.

its unlikely narendra; as most of my links are from comments etc and some of them being top comments and so far as sarah mentions according to the link checker in google it shows these links and some 'top commenter' links as well, BUT in relation to yahoo explorer if the backlink is there but not in google, I usually head over to that site and stumble it or social bookmark it.
This gets the site indexed via google and gets me another backlink :p

I think it's more likely that your blog has dropped out of the top commentators list.
Getting your blog into a top commentators list can bring you a little traffic but it shouldn't be a long term solution. You should be looking to get blog links in blog posts and articles as these are unlikely to ever be removed therefore your PageRanl will be more stable and won't fluctuate according to how often you've been leaving comments.

Top commentator list is usually reset every month. So are you ready to comment enough to get there every month forever? :)
It's nice bonus but bad strategy.

Usually there are some prize for top commentators and that makes it sweet sometimes. But if you are expecting to increase your PR by being on top commentator, it will not surely deliver as it will change from time to time.
By the way, a little offbeat here, the three top monthly commentators' blog in my site will be posted in my What Other Are Saying for the following month. So if you have anything to say in ThatwasHOT!, it's all welcome.

that stange, become top commentator usually make your backlink increased. Hmm or you do a mistake like this :
your site is : http://narendra.com
but you comment as http://www.narendra.com
Of course it'll make difference

you have a setting in google web masters tool to make google consider only one specified format. If that is enabled then I dont think it makes a difference in backlinks .

you have a setting in google web masters tool to make google consider only one specified format. If that is enabled then I dont think it makes a difference in backlinks .
It can still make a difference. First off, the setting is only for Google to determine which domain you prefer to have shown in the results. I've not actually read anywhere that Google says by selecting a specific domain in that option it will combine backlinks to both types of the domain.
So you should still do a check via htaccess as explained in another thread.
Secondly, Google isn't the only search engine out there. So just because you've changed it for Google doesn't mean that Yahoo or MSN will pick up on that.
