I'm curious what everyones following policy is on Twitter. Specifically, do you follow everyone who follows you in Twitter?

I only follow people who I know. If anyone follows me I check their page to see if they're just a spammer, if they are then I block them. If they're not then I just leave them to it. I have my settings set to show me any replies to me so even if I'm not following someone, if they send me a reply I'll see it and sometimes if I've had a few comments off someone and find them of interest I'll follow them.

I generally follow everyone on twitter with the exception of bots and people who use those auto-twit services to submit their blog posts.

I voted no because I don't follow the people who only update when they have a new blog post (same as above). I also unfollow everyone who unfollows me after a few days.

FriendorFollow.com is a good site to see who you follow, but don't follow you back.

You would probably have to include me on that list. I don't actively use Twitter and I'm not sure if I ever will. Currently 95% of my tweets are post updates from my blogs.

I follow back for some time than unfollow if I don't like quantity/quality of updates.

Once in a month, I open up my followers list and follow everyone who I am not following. Sometimes, when I found a spammer following me, then I tend to remove him/her. I don't use Twitter much but just to find what blog world is upto these days because I find even those things via Twitter which people don't share anywhere else.

it's depend on who is the follower, if it's my friend, or someone i know or someone which i offered to exchange twitter, i will do following their twitter also. But there is a people who following me but i don't know who is their, so there is no reason for me to follow them.

Seriously, for anyone that uses Twitter is this way, that person is just begging to have their timeline filled with useless garbage. However, when I first started out, this is what happened. Anyone that followed me I followed back. At some point though, you realize that not everyone is as interesting as you might think they are. Thus, I tend to check out the 10 recent tweets from anyone that has followed me and use that as my basis for following someone back. I have a much better timeline oriented with the stuff I'm interested in from interesting people.

In reality, I think twitter does not really have a good sense. Why do you want to know everything that a person is doing? Unless if it's God or something. Of course, there is some temptation to follow a VIP but i still think it does not make sense. And another thing, if you are following a hundred people. You will really spend much time just knowing what they are doing. by the way, I am subscribed to many rss feed and I can barely keep up with the post so twitter will be a real problem to me.

That's the beauty of twitter. You don't need to keep up with everything. I see twitter as a bit like a public access MSN where I've got a number of online contacts, some just muttering to themselves, others asking questions and hoping for an answer, some having conversations.

When you work at home and away from the office environment, having twitter on (via twhirl for example) is a bit like being in a virtual office. You get notifications when someone says something, maybe you over hear a conversation (ie. people replying to each other) or someone asks a general question.

However, that said, I probably make maybe 5-10 updates a day, more if I have a conversation with someone, and so do most of those I follow so it can be fairly quiet with just the occasional mumble.

At least that's the way I see it!

I put "yes" but only because there wasn't a "sort of" option. LOL. I check out every new follower's page and then I usually follow ... unless I can see it's spam or something way off topic for me. Right now I'm behind and have a bunch of new adds to check out. *sigh* Not enough hours in a day for me right now. *SmiLes* Suzanne

I do the same general thing. I'll see if the new follower is on topic, interesting, etc. But that's a lot of people to digg through, haha. :)

As much as I love to use twitter to drum up traffic, I must confess, I hardly have the time to even log in. Currently, one of my member (bless her) has volunteered to do whatever she can for our community site.

I'm here as I'm a long time almost silent reader (and subscriber) of Blogging Tips and Kevin has helped me out a couple of times along my blogging journey. I can never thank him enough. :)

If I know the person in some way I'll likely (mostly) follow them, otherwise I do what a couple of others have said they do and check out their profile page and website if they have one. If they look worthwhile following then I will for a while to see how it goes.

do you think children use twitter?

Is this some kind of survey?

I think it's a safe bet that they do, whether they're meant to or not. If it's on the internet and free kids will have had a go of it.

You obviously don't know kids. The ones I know spend more time on MSN, facebook, myspace, and other social networking sites than most other people, and twitter ties in with all of that allowing them to send messages and keep up with what their friends are doing.

:D 15yo is not a kid anymore, as far as i see it...

@hurricane
hmmm, yep, i also believe that they are all over facebook and also myspace. That's what I am talking about. Those things are fun. You change theme, add applications, put games and engage with people. But i don't really see it with twitter. There are even older people tired in twitter and just use it to promote their posts.

I have three nieces, ages 10 through to 20. They spend a fortune on sending text messages with their mobiles phones, for some reason they think it's fun. And it's not much different than using twitter.

ok, I won't argue with that. Maybe it is just different in our places. Or maybe twittering is just different than text messaging. It is tiring sometimes. And by the way, cell phone is mobile, there's convenience in it. :)

You can send an SMS to twitter and everyone can see it? It's cheaper than sending an SMS to 10 friends ;)

Also, at least in the UK, the mobile phones are big business. Modern phones are getting WiFi, we've got WiFi spots all over the country, all phones can connect to the web and some providers off unlimited connection included in the price. These days a mobile phone is just a mobile computer.

That's a non-argument. If that was a deciding factor then they wouldn't be interested in Facebook etc. They're not always outside of the house and when they are most of their time is spent sat at a computer chatting to friends. Twitter allows them to easily keep in contact with lots of friends all in one go with short snappy little messages - just like when sending an SMS, but without the cost.

I certainly don't follow everyone who follows me. Generally I follow back someone who is-

1) Known to me
2) involved in active conversation
3) involved in interesting conversation
4) post links of interesting articles

I have a no-first-follow policy usually. if someone follows me, I follow them back if their:

1. Previous tweets interest me
2. He/She is following the people I follow.
3. They have less "following" than "followers"

slee

i always check out their tweets but if they dont seem to have anything interesting then i wont follow back. it is quite interesting the amount of follows you get trying to get you to follow them

If a tweeter follows me on Twitter, I check them out, read their Twitterstream and read their blog to see if they have the same interests that I have (Twitter, social media, PR, marketing, blogging, technology, gadgets) and if they do, I will very likely follow them.

I follow people on Twitter to learn as much as I can from their tweets. I tweet informational blog articles to inform my audience on the latest in my industry.

I guess I'm just plain addicted really BAD to Twitter lol......

I always follow someone who follows me because if they take the time to do it for me than they just simply deserve the favor back in return. By following me for free they are giving me more authority so i might as well do it back.

I generally follow back those who have been following me. but the exeption has to be made. say no to spammers/bot. and i don't follow people whose update i don't really understand. i tweet for fun, to gain cool infos, to make friends. Not to get spammed, so my vote is 'no'
