View Full Version : Odd member title
Is it just me seeing it or is my member title really just a single letter T rather than 'member' or whatever else it should be? Edit: I seem to have acquired some sergeant stripes too
Never mind, I see there's some updating going on and it's not just me now :)

The Image Ranks look cool but alt text on images seems missing....first time I couldn't understand...then read the rank title under my name and got that!

I find the images as well as titles very odd. Seargeant and stuff has nothing to do with a forum.

I'd been updating my file and thought I'd broken it :D

i dont know the meaning of any of those words..is it like those of beginner and advance pro kind of things??

Most forum software has a system for indicating rank based on post count. Sergeant is a rank. So sergeant and stuff doesn't really have nothing to do with it. In fact it probably has more to do with it that the ranks in use before - member, senior member and so on.
Personally I prefer to not have anything indicating post count visible, or advancement based on post count available, as in my experience it tends to cause people to post just to gain advancement which can be counterproductive. But YMMV (your mileage may vary).

They're military ranks - private, lance corporal, corporal, sergeant and so on.

I know that almost all forums display ranks based on post counts. But these ones are a bit odd. Especially those unusually long odd looking images which isnt even centered properly. Some thing for subtle like small starts or smaller badges should do the trick.

They're stripes. If someone was in the army they would have those on their shoulders so that others could look at them and known instantly want rank they were. Most of the military (at least in the UK) have them. Well I know the Air Force and Army do, not sure on Navy but I'd imagine it's the same.

I'll probably decerease the size of the images as they are a little big.
I'm happy to use a different ranking system. Before it was just junior, member and senior member which was a little boring so I thought I'd mess around with it :)
I changed things up a bit. I've decreased the size of the ranks and I've moved everyones avatar to the right hand side.
Let me know what you think :)
Indyan

I think it should be the otherway around. The avatar below user id, and rank image to the right. As our eyes are just trained to have a quick glance at the left to see the avatar and recognise the poster.

yes but the member title is on the left hand side so it makes more sense to place it underneath. I think this way makes posts appear a little more personal.
might be worth having a page on ranks? nice idea though. on the kids forum i run we have cartoon characters that the children collect as they become more active.
The rank icons are looking better know they'd been reduced in size. I don't like where the avatars have been moved to though. I use them to help me identify a poster and I look to the left for that. Now I only have the username for that, and words sometimes don't register in my head.

I've moved the avatar back (still working on it). The avatar is displayed via plain html but the rank is displayed using a variable so it's not aligning properly.

I think now would be a good time for the forum community to come up with a list of ranks that are blogging related. Would also be cool to have an image set to go along with the ranks.
I guess we could start this off by generating a list of blogging terms and then see if we can put those in order for a ranking structure? For instance, the top rank could be A-Lister :)

Sounds good to me. We can leave the army ranks there until we get the titles and ranks resolved.
The titles and ranks are actually seperate in vbulletin but I think it's better to
keep them in align with each other i.e. when you move up to the next title you get a new image.
We need to decide what the name is for each post level. This is the post levels I currently have :
Title|Posts Required
Cadet|0
Private|5
Private First Class|10
Specialist|30
Corporal|50
Sergeant|75
Staff Sergeant|100
Sergeant First Class|150
Master Sergeant|200
First Sergeant|250
Sergeant Major|350
Command Sergeant Major|500
Sergeant Major of the Army|750
Second Lieutenant|1000
First Lieutenant|1250
Captain|1500
Major|1750
Lieutenant Colonel|2000
Colonel|2500
Brigadier General|3000
Major General|3500
Lieutenant General|4000
General|4500
General of the Army|5000
We don't need to have this many ranks. We could just have 5 or 10. However, I think this is a good progression for the titles as it rewards members with new ranks near the start but as it progresses ranks are harder to get so they mean more.
Indyan - ProBlogger is a good suggestion
I think Newbie is a good one for the first rank o perhaps something like 'wet behind the ears' :)
I'll update the table with the suggestions as they come and then we can discuss where they go etc :)

Right guys
Just to give you an idea of how many names we need.
Here is the table with spaces missing. Let me know what position you want you're suggestion in :)

Feedback is appreciated. Once we get this list sorted the army rank system will be removed and replaced with this list.

I'd put ProBlogger at about 1000 posts, or somewhere nearer the top end of the scale.

I'll do another update of the table once we get some more suggestions.

For 0 Posts, I have suggested something different. Now..these terms are not relative to posts but all terms have propper meanings. Thanks to Extensive blogging glossary from : http://www.samizdata.net/blog/glossary.html
For some cases, terms have been converted to sound as a blogger. Hope you like my suggestions. Improvements welcome.
although some of those have meanings some for example like kittyblogger sound like you are a newbie - might just be me?

Kittyblogger does not mean a newbie...read the above guide. Kittyblogger means:
noun. Technically someone who uses their blog to write about their cats, but is mostly used to describe mundane Journal Blog (qv) content. Often used as an epithet but not always taken as one.

Good list nav. Some of them are great but some of them are a little ambiguous so we would have to explain them somewhere on the site.
It would be great if you could hover over the titles and see an explanation but unfortunately vbulletin doesn't have that functionality.

In this vbulletin plugin...it suggests that Rank Description can also be shown along with the rank: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=194043 You may like to check this out.

Thats more for adding numerous ranks instead of just the main one. I'd rather just use the default one if we can for now .
thanks for the link anyways. we could maybe use it for something in the future :)

To be honest, I wouldn't have so many different ranks. I can understand the idea of allowing new users to achieve a different rank quicker, but there are so many listed there and I think once someone's hit 1000 posts they probably won't care that much.
I'd suggest post counts of
0
10
50
100
250
500
1000
5000
I think then you could have some decent ranks for each of those, associated with blogging of course, and people's ranks wouldn't be changing every day then.
Just my thought :)

yeah thats true. It's just a small way to encourage members to post more and reward those who contribute on a regular basis.
There are some good suggestions in Navs list but I think some of them are not very obvious.
Perhaps we should go with something generic.
For example :
Types of animals - start of as a slug and then progress to a lion :)
Frequency of posting - Newbie, Regular posting, Turbo Poster, Blogging Tips Nut etc
Indyan

I think its better to go with navjots list. The problem will exist with some of the animals also. I mean who is the king? lion or tiger?
What you can do is reduce the no. of categories for now and eliminate the vague entries in navjots list till we can come up with some sensible alternatives.
