Well anything done online to interact with users can be termed as social media. EVen this forum, our blogs, orkut, facebook, Wikis, Social Bookmarking sites, Photo Sharing sites, file sharing sites - everything comes under Social Media. We use social media a lot in our lives but its just the ignorance to the term we have it in us.

Social media - the medium or way how people relate to one another, be it online or not. :D

Are we going to make a mini-wiki here? :D

Social Media has always been around in one form or the other, it's just a term coined by someone with influence a bit like 'Web 2.0' (where was the 1.0?). There's no difference to a blog from today than a personal website back in 1996, just a better design, better structure and a decent framework to make updating/adding to it easier.

To me, social media is simply a way to share something publicly/socially. You share your bookmarks on delicious, you share a page you've really liked via stumbleupon, you share your daily thoughts on twitter, you share whatever you want to write about on your blog. If it's not private then it's out there for the world to see.
