Hello. Anyone got an idea how to make a social Bookmarking website. I want to start one that will beat digg someday, I hope. I am willing to learn but I don't know where to start. What do you think will I need and any suggestion is welcome. :)

Well first you need to find a platform!

Then you need to figure out if it's going to be a submission network or a group network!

So will it be like digg or like blogcatalog?

From there you need to find the software, install, test and market it's a very hard process these days! Would have had a better chance a year ago!

You need to ask yourself, what is going to make you stand out from all of the other social networks, and how much work is involved. Are you a developer or are you just intending to get some pre-written software and work with that, because if you are then I'm sure plenty of others have tried the same software and gone the same route.

I'm not saying it's not possible, but without knowing what you're capable of development wise, what your expertise is in etc. it's not a very easy question to answer.

i want it to be a digg-like where user submits the url and they vote and think I've got some pretty idea. I just don't know if it will be worth the risk. I got some hand on php, SQL, and web developing but I'm still amateur. If there's a pre-written software, definitely I want to get a hand on it to have some idea. Do you know some open source software where I can start?

Maybe go on a developers forum and ask them what softwares/platforms are being used for the others ... and ask how much it would cost to have something like that developed. Good luck with it and keep us posted. *SmiLes* Suzanne

Lot of people go via the Pligg route and most of them end dead because using the same code over and over again provides nothing new. I think you should develop something on your own. And if you are worrying about starting from scratch, I can suggest two frameworks or softwares which you can customise and extend to make a great bookmarking site:

Pinax: http://pinaxproject.com/ Check its demo at http://cloud27.com/ But that's just one example. You can make a very different type of site still based on Pinax.

Scuttle: http://sourceforge.net/projects/scuttle/

to beat old social bookmarking site, you need value added, which make your social bookmarking site is unique and different from the other. Don't make social bookmarking like digg or stumble, you can't beat it...Make something unique.

Actually, i don't want to make you give up, but i just wanna said that i think is hard to beat digg/other excisting social bookmarking site, because, although you already make unique social bookmarking site, they have a funds, they will develop and researching system again, they will do more than you do, because they have a funds....

I mean, like this :
You make a contest, top submitter in your site in 1 month get $1000
Digg can make it $5000 --> you automatically lose....

You make your system can be used in handphone (people can bookmark to your site using handphone)
Digg can do research to make their system can be used in Ipod.....

I just wanna said, it's hard, for sure....
But don't give up, it's just my opinion, hopefully i'm wrong :P

yeah, that's just bad because they are already there but of course, planning to dugg digg is something that will cannot do overnight. You need to climb the rope in doing this. And I am thinking to make it local first. For our country first, then when funds are already coming, that's the time maybe to expand.

hey its a good idea and it really works well! you can use the pligg (http://pligg.com) one to make a social bookmarking site like digg but you are really serious about its promotion better have a custom theme, few mods, a vb forum, a job board, blog and many others :) the most sites you see are based on the pligg only ;)

Maybe I'll take that pligg path as you say. I visited their site and there are lots of discussions going on in their forum so I think it will be a great help. Thanks for referring me to Pligg.
