Here are few way that i used and using to make the most out of my blog:

Private ads
Private ads are real popular these days and which you can make some quick and big money than the ad networks pay!

So here are some tips to sell more ads:

Giveaway some free ads to your fellow bloggers(better same niche and not in your friends list) so they can try it for a month or so and can buy if they liked
Or fill some spots yourself with some affiliate programs, so people may think there are already some ads
Remember do just have empty spots just fill them with something
After filling announce in blogging or webmaster forums that you are looking for adverts
Give some bonus to long term adverts. Like i give 10% discount to adverts who advertise for more than 3 months
And the most important thing is don't forget to keep you adverts in list like keep them updated with your latest spots and offers

Adsense
Another quick way and the easy way is Google Adsense. As you know the more traffic you get the better chances of click you get

So keeping your ads in perfect spots is important! You have make sure to keep them visible and above the fold.
The most hot spots are below the 468x60(i use image) post title in the homepage, sidebar rectangle, rectangle(better text) below the title in single post, header 768x60(better image), footer of single post (better image) and link units better the navigation or in the sidebar
Below is the example hot spots
http://i34.tinypic.com/2lxeau1.jpg
Dark colored spots does better performance and lighter with poor performance
Remember image ads always pays better than text but you have to be careful choosing the spots for images and text ads

Inline ad networks:
These inline ads are made popular but kontera (http://kontera.com) which is a current leader. I have been using it for over 6 months and have some better stats but here come a new network call infolinks (http://infolinks.com) same as kontera but promise to do better performance, i too used and using it my tuts blog with nice performance but not much as kontera does!(maybe i think my site is too new or infolinks still need to understand my content)

If you write paid reviews then let you adverts know that your blog have inline ads coz my adverts wont like inline ads as they distract reader.

Paid reviews:
I have used and using paid reviews for over 2 years and they ready does great job in making more money. With some of my blog i have made some 800 per month only from paid reviews
Things i do:

I have joined some 8 paid to review sites and added a blog
Then bid to all the offer and accept all the offers you get
Then you will get at least 10 approves offer per day!
You can write them all or just hire someone to write them and pay them just for the word counts
But don't forget to update your site with unpaid posts

Enjoyed.?! Shoot a Thanks

have you ever thought of dabbling with affiliate marketing? ive been running a site on xbox 360 gaming and i have considered trying this out but so far i don't really know where to begin. it is funny as i have helped others with their own sites but when it comes down to my own i don't seem to have the confidence.

Oh yeah am not much into affiliate marketing. But I have tried for a while and seems to be no luck, so left but with some hope somewhere i get back this and time better performance. As far as I think affiliate marketing really needs powerful marketing strategies like you must be a influential to refer others or better writing skills to impress or a niche targeted traffic or a strong email list! For me I'll do a 1000 words review based on that affiliate, will promote as much as i can like forum posting, banner ads and if its better enough to make more then even i will make a short video and will try to get as many bookmarks as possible.

yeah i agree but for me these days paid reviews seems to be less than before!

Have you got any affiliate links or anything on the site yet? If not then you could always create your own xbox 360 shopping page(s) and put up products that you can highly recommend, link them through to a shopping site such as Amazon. Direct linking on Amazon UK can pay up to 7.5%. You could also create a page or pages on various games available, maybe put up a simple AJAX star rater (I can recommend a simple to implement one if you need) and get people to rate the games. Rather than just listing out the pages you could move into the area of having a page per game, similar to Amazon, and allow people to review them. A simple WordPress site would be able to deal with most of this for you.

Ooo am getting an idea for one of my own sites now.. :D

Idea is not as simple as you mentioned. Its a lot easier to create dozens of affiliate sites. Biggest problem is getting the traffic and getting the conversions and that is the place where I fail. I tend to stay away from Affiliate marketing because I know its not my cuppa of tea! I am bad at getting the PPC traffic which is one major requirement for Affiliate marketing.

I already run several affiliate sites so I'm not just talking off the top of my head ;) Also my comment was in response to Slee's question about expanding an existing site, ie. a site that already has traffic.

As with any site, it usually takes time and effort to make a site worthy simply because you want to make it unique. However, that said, you could easily build a community using WordPress, and get others to do your work for you. Take this idea

You add a WordPress blog onto an existing, established site, say in a directory called shopping, or reviews. Create categories for each product group, so if you wanted to target xbox games (keeping on the same subject as Slee's site) you could have a games category and within that the various genres of games. You can then populate each category with a few games in each. I'm guessing Slee already has an xbox and possible has knowledge of a selection of games, and of course writing about what you know is the easiest job going.

So you set up a mini review blog with each product having its own post, you can easily install a star rater (I'm sure there's a plugin but if not the scripts are easy enough to add in), and you allow other user comments. However every product has a 'buy this product from' link, and you can link to a few sites such as Amazon. If the site is targeted to the UK then Amazon UK and Play.com would be the two major sites, although Amazon pays more in affiliate fees. if the site attracts international visitors then perhaps list a few different sites to accommodate various countries.

You now have a site with a few products in each category and people can rate the product and leave a comment, thereby creating content for you. The next step is then to invite contributors to the site to add their own posts for other games, a brief write up about it, and their own personal review. In return you can give them a link from each of their posts back to their own site. You make them a contributor so that you can update the post before it goes live to add in your own affiliate code.

If you do it right you can get a few people willing to write a brief review about a game in return for a link. It's just guest posting but in a different way (well not much different to be honest).

That's just one way to do it. Personally I'd probably just slowly build up the site myself, however if you can get one or two regular commentators you can always offer them a bit more exposure if they want to contribute, or if the site is making money, offer them a cash payment, X reviews for $Y.

Affiliate marketing isn't hard, it's just time consuming if done right. But once it's set up you can just forget about the site and let it earn for you. I can make $50 in one affiliate sale off one of my sites. I don't have to maintain the product and I don't have to get involved in the sale side of things. I just keep the website ticking over and enjoy the sales :)

A lot have been saying that affiliate marketing works but it doesn't work for me somehow.

Paid reviews are nice - now if only I could get more sponsors.
