Same here. I have never spend a dime on advertising my blog. Advertising would only be useful if I have a product or service to sell and blogging is none. Blog is just a place where you share your thoughts. If people will like it, they will come again otherwise a bye-bye. So no advertising needed as far for this.
Though buying ads at related blogs still is a good option.

I have never paid but i do some experiments with my blog, so i am going to spend some money this time to experiment on backlinks an PR.
BTW would still not set any budget for that.

Have any of you ever exchanged links or ads with other blogs that would compliment each other?
Would you enter a contest if the "prize" was an advertising spot on the blog?
Just trying to come up with some ideas that would get the same result ... for free. *SmiLes* Suzanne

I never advertise my blog, but I advertise my other sites.
My budget is based upon how much I make the money before.

Yeah i do have done some ad exchanges and nice traffic too. And no i don't enter small contests with advertising spot! coz many ask to do some ridiculous things(a way big list) to enter which i don't think that much worth!

Generally I avoid such contests which only have advertising spots as prize. But I do sponsor such contests with ad spots on my blogs ! :D

I find that so interesting ... from a psychology standpoint. You want others to sign up for a contest with a prize that you wouldn't be interested in yourself? LOL That's funny.
Do you feel that sites that offer that are not busy or successful enough yet to waste your time for that type of prize or what is you thinking behind that? I truly just want to learn from this ... I'm not picking on you at all.
I've wanted to do a content on my blog ... and I am still thinking through what would be best for my visitors and still work well for me too.

My advertising budget is numero uno right now. Down the road, I might think about buying adspots but for now I am ok with winning adspots in contests, blog commenting, forums and social media. Theres so many free alternatives these days , its wonderful!

Well that's the reality you will find everywhere. I don't want to name any blogs here but I see this happening everywhere. And since I cannot afford any cash or other types of prizes, I generally donate any ad space on my site as prizes to gain that extra exposure. But I do enter some contests but make sure apart from ad spots, it does have something extra to offer. Though till now, I haven't won any ad spot at any website!

SEO is way to make your blog popular without any cost but it's takes too long time.....

I've tried StumbleUpon advertising. Cheap per visitors but pretty much equals (or even lower) than usual SU traffic for converting into readers.
Tried 125x125 exchange programs. Terrible results, have to make thousand impressions to get single click to your blog. Made big post on it that brought me times more traffic than all those networks combined.
Had 125x125 banner on bloggingtips for a week. :) Hardly noticed traffic increase to what I already get from links and comments in blog critique.
