How much does submitting to directories actually help? I read that it is increasingly less helpful, so I don't think it would be worth it to submit to 300 directories when it won't produce good results. I already submitted to the top 30.

Your right, it may not give you much traffic from each of those directories but with each directory its another link coming into your blog.
So the rule of thumb I use is. I can only do so much. So now I just have to do everything in order of importance. If submitting to directories is low on your list, do it later. If it high on your list, get to it.
To your success

Yes, but is it true that Google can tell what are directory links and devalue them?

Yeah, almost all the free directories have little or no effect on your SERPs.
In summary, it's a waste of time/money submitting your website to more than 30 of the better directories(even that might be an exaggarated figure)
Looking forward to hearing what Kevin has to say about this...

I'm personally not a huge fan of using directories for promoting a website. Most will send you very little traffic however I'm sure if you submitted your blog to hundreds of directories you would see a small jump in traffic.
I'd still rather spend my time writing on my blog than spending hours submitting my blog to directories etc :)

Most of the time directory submission sites have nofollow & noindex attribute and a redirect page... Those won't deliver traffic and search engine spiders will not crawl & recognize your url.

Musicology101 not all directories have no index and no follow attributes.
I have received 192 visits from bloggingfusion.com ......... That isn't bad.
According to Google Analytics out of 100 referrers they are number 25 compared to digg which is number 73. They are ranked right up there with mybloglog that comes in at 21 - technorati.com that comes in at 22 and bloglines that comes in at 23. I guess it depends on what directory you submit to.

infovilesilencer has the most trustworthy list of search engine friendly directories. I have submitted some of my sites to this list (400 directories) and, though I havent seen any direct referrals, I did notice a huge jump in the results of some keywords I submitted as titles.
So, if you want to position your site in the SERPS, directories are useful.

Hi Kevin,
My friend has joined a lot of directories and according to him, it helped a lot to his site that is why I am joining too. So maybe I think having quality blogs have more chance to earn traffic whether submitted to directories or not.

Directory Submission is still important. It's a simple way to obtain back links to your site.you can't expect too much traffic from directories but it still have a contribution in your search engine placement.

Well, directory submission is not really on driving traffic to your site but more on gaining a page rank. The more inks directing to your site, the more chances you'll get to have a rank. In that case also, if you already got a page rank, traffic will then follow coz people will find your site credible.

if your blog is new, submitting to directories is helpful, especially if you submit your blog to top directories. and i think I read it somewhere before that even google sometimes use top directories for their rankings but I am not really sure about it.
