I have had my site up for five weeks and I still struggle greatly to get clicks. I was wondering if anyone would kindly critique my ad positions and give me advice in that regard? Thanks.

Google ads arent always the best performers for blogs, particularly those with less than a few thousand subscribers. However, one thing I think could help is reducing the number of google ads you have. You have 3 google ads at the top of the page which is too much in my opinion. Try and make the ads compliment your content and not the other way around :)

IF you are getting bad returns it could be the term is just a low paying term.

You could tap into alternative ad sources and hope for a better payout. CPL or CPA ads can tend to do well if you have the right traffic, with your sports site it could be possible.

I can suggest http://www.casalemedia.com or even http://www.revenuegateway.com

also, in terms of constructive crit you may want to change the right side bar, the color with the blue doesn't quite work in my opinion and could veer a few away from your site, it also seems a bit cluttered.

5 weeks isn't really long at all. Some people take years to get good returns from adsense.

It's not that I'm getting bad $ per click. I'm just not getting good CTR. I realize that it might take a long time to make good money, but longetivity shouldn't affect CTR, should it? Whether I get 300 hits a day or 300k, CTR is determined by %, so I just want tips on improving placement.

And, I saw that someone said the leaderboard at the top was too much, but would having too many ads actually hurt click thru rate?

yes it can do. CTR can drop when there are more ads than content in an area. You need to have more content and integrate the google ads better with the content.

Google Adsense won't make you much at all, especially if you're not receiving a lot of visitors. Some people who get thousands and thousands of unique visitors a day don't get over a few hundred a month. But of course, some do better than others and it depends on your niche.

Once your blog gets bigger, the readerbase grows, you get more traffic, better PageRank, etc. then you can replace the Adsense and start doing sponsorships and selling your own advertising directly. That'll earn you a lot more and you'd get to be in charge. :)

True, at least set your goal within a six month period, that is a minimum, then, I would redesign the whole layout, it's really confusing, the background color, the ad positioning, and all the content it's like messed up.

Are you saying that my layout is messed up? If so, I certainly won't wait a 5 more months to redesign it. But, most people I hear from don't have it messed up on their computers... I'm not technically savy enough to figure out why it is messed up on whatever browser and operating system you use.
