When it comes to building quality links back to your web sites, it’s important not only to get people linking to your main page, but also your internal links. The internal pages of your blog or web site is where you are going to get all of your longtail keywords ranked, and traffic from the search engines. At the same time you also want to focus on link building for your main page, so what is the best solution?

Building PageRanked Links with BuildMyRank

Over the past couple of weeks I have been playing around with a content link building service called BuildMyRank. So far it’s been really cool to work with their site and watch my backlinks grow through the use of their site. How it works is quite simple:

Write up a few 150+ word articles.

Publish your articles through BuildMyRank

Keep an eye on your backlinks process.

Yes, it looks quite simple and that’s just a quick review on how the service works. To better explain, you pay a monthly fee to access their service, which is BuildMyRank publishing your article content on their network of pageranked sites. For ever 150 article you write, you get to insert one url back to your site. If you write longer articles, you can place an extra link for every 150 words. Also, if you don’t want to write your own articles, you can outsource your writing (which I will go into detail on a future post). On top of everything mentioned, BuildMyRank will then post your article links to a bunch of other directories and rss feeds to increase the link juice and exposure to your site links.

Tracking Your Backlink Building Results

First of all, the admin area for BuildMyRank is straight forward and extremely easy to use. Once you are logged in, you will see a bunch of reports, breaking down how many links/articles you have active, your top keywords used and a few other reports.

I’ve been using BuildMyRank for a couple weeks now and have posted around 120 articles, which are currently live. The way BuildMyRank posts your 150+ word articles to sites in their network is quite random. I’ve seen and talked to other people using their service who have received PR6 sites linking back to them, but so far I only have a couple PR5 links in place. You can see my currently links received below.

As you can see, the majority of these links are coming from PR1, 2 and 3 sites… but there are a decent amount PR4 sites (around 10%). It’s quite exciting when you get the PR5 sites linking back to you, but they are rare. As mentioned, I’m still waiting for my first PR6… and I know it will come soon!

Next week I will be writing a follow up post on how the next 100 article submissions perform, along with how to outsource your article marketing for cheap.

How to Use BuildMyRank for Best Results

We talked about the importance of linking in the beginning of the post, and not just about building links to your main page. Think about how many articles you’ve written for your blog or published on your site, that are just sitting nicely on the 2nd, 3rd or 4th pages of Google. They are most likely excellent quality articles, but they were just never given the chance to get the link backs that they deserve. This is exactly what BuildMyRank can do for you.

Right now I’m testing my link building efforts with 20 different sites / domains, and focusing the majority of the link building on long tail keywords and inner page content. Even within a week’s time, I’m already seeing some of my rankings creep up in the results. In the screenshot above you will see what it looks like when you have your articles in que, or already live on active sites. I blurred out the titles and keywords I am targeting, but you can clearly see the date the article was created, when it was published, if the post is now indexed in the search results and most importantly, the PageRank of the site your article and link is now featured on.

Most articles you submit will go live within 24 hours, and you can play with the settings in your account to change how many active articles and links you want to go live daily. This ranges from 1 to 10 per day, or you can go with “Random”, which will post a different amount of articles daily.

Fro what I’ve read from other people who are using BuildMyRank, it takes a lot of link building and article submissions to see any real movement, so I’m excited to see the results in the coming weeks as I continue to add more articles to create more incoming one way links.

10 Free Links Trial + The Costs of BuildMyRank

Considering how in depth and useful of a service BuildMyRank is, I don’t think it’s that costly of a service at all. If you are going to be writing your own articles, the only cost you have to pay is the monthly subscription amount, which is based on how many domains you want to promote through their site. You can see the breakdown of subscription plans below. It really makes sense to go for the 10 or 20 domains, as it’s just a few dollars more than the minimum 5 domain subscription plans. If you want to promote more than 20 domains, they have larger plans as well.

Up to 5 domains – $59/month
Up to 10 domains – $79/month
Up to 20 domains – $99/month

Right now BuildMyRank is holding a free trial where they are offering you the 10 incoming one way links to your web site or blog for free. You don’t even need a credit card! This is an insane opportunity to take a few minutes to write up some 150 word articles, and possibly bring in PR4, 5 or even 6 web sites with a one way link back to your site!

How Helpful are Internal Backlinks for SEO Purposes?

With all the talk about internal link building and search engine rankings, I wanted to get an answers from someone who specializes in the seo and link building business. I sent over a few questions to my friend Alex Pyatetsky from TheHoth link building service. The question was simple… “How Much Do Internal Links Help with Search Engine Rankings?”… you will find his full answer below.

Internal links count. Period.

If SEO is an election and building links is pounding the pavement and shaking hands, then internal linking is interparty endorsements. Its a way to throw around accumulated clout (e.g. site authority) and focus it on the pages that you want to win the SERP election.

Here is a true story to help illustrate.

I was recently consulting for a client who previously owned several of the top blogs in his niche. He’s in a space where keywords have very brief lifespans, roughly 2-4 weeks before everyone forgets and moves on to the next thing. Once upon a time, every post on these authoritative blogs would rank in the top 5 within days/hours. But one day, it all changed and his fat, healthy cash cows went on the Olson Twins’ diet.

Upon reviewing the site, I noticed that he had no “Recent Posts” section, which would create a site-wide link to each of his new posts. This would allow him to throw around his site’s built-up authority to the new pages that need it most, when they need it most so they can rank faster.

As we dug deeper, I learned that one of the talking heads in the SEO industry previously told my client that having a site-wide element like a “Recents Posts” widget could hurt his blog because it would count as duplicate content.

This, of course, is the epitome of B.S. Global elements like “Recent Posts,” “Most Popular Posts,”etc., create great navigational experiences for users and very strong internal link structures for crawlers to index featured pages. Its ridiculous to think that they could hurt a site.

So guess what! My client got scared and took off the “Recent Posts” widget on all of his blogs as part of a sweeping round of changes. Magically, all future posts failed to rank.

Sure enough, he implemented my advice, returned the “Recently Posts” widget, and with a few weeks he started killing it again in the SERPs.

The moral of the story is

1) Don’t listen to the talking heads. [I'm referring to worshiped industry idols who preach unhelpful dogma, not the band. The band is awesome.]

2) Internal links count. Period.

So there you have it. If you are already building internal links on your blog, awesome! If not, you can easily make up for lost time with the use of the SEO Smart Links plugin.

Answer to this question is easy enough to understand. Anyone can do this. The way you sell goods and services to the populace is through showmanship, and more importantly, advertising. Advertising has been a key to commercial ventures for a long time, probably since the first people began to barter and trade with one another so many millennia ago. In the nineteenth and twentieth century, men and women were able to purchase a variety of goods and services through a variety of avenues. These included traveling salesman, traditional establishments such as corner stores, and drug stores, as well as mail order catalogs.

In the modern era, all of these advertising methods are still available. However, technology has changed the game yet again, as it so often does. The development of the Internet during the 1980s and 90s has changed virtually every aspect of human society from interpersonal communication to commercial ventures. Millions of people spend billions of dollars every day on the web purchasing everything from books to medical insurance through websites.

If everyone is purchasing and selling goods and services on the web, then why not improve your businesses marketability through the use of web-based advertising?

I am not telling you to engage in the absolutely ludicrous, wholly ineffective, totally annoying type of advertising which necessitates the transmission of the blanket-e-mails across the Web. This type of advertising is wholly outdated, and viewed as a nuisance by many of us went the Internet on a daily basis, because of the fact that these bulk-email-advertisements constantly fill our Internet e-mail boxes, and are usually deleted without ever being opened.

Does this sound like a surefire way to sell your products to the public? I think not. There is a much more effective type of Internet-based advertising, which has become prevalent throughout business world recently. Pay per click advertising, or PPC, is one of the only types of advertising available on the web, which allows business owners to make a profit through their advertisements, while also allowing them to increase their customer bases exponentially through ever-increasing public exposure.

Furthermore, the types of advertisements generated by PPC software such as Google AdWords allows business owners to set up target audiences based on factors such as ethnicity, religion, gender, interests, as well as other factors. At the same time, these types of software also allow the business owner the ability to track the effectiveness of any PPC advertisements on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, which in turn allows business owners and their employees to constantly revamp and rethink marketing strategies in an effort to improve their products’ overall marketability. PPC software is among the most difficult software to operate on the web.

However, many corporations offer well-organized tutorials, which will greatly increase any users understanding of the software. At the same time, privately maintained websites such as www.PPC.org also provide discussion forums and articles, which offer a copious amount of PPC tips and PPC tricks for anyone’s use.

Most of them do contain great information, but they never tell you how to actually implement it, you’re not given a daily action plan that you can use.

This post will cover a few things you need to do to build your list, but it will also give you a daily plan to get it done.

Things you need to start list building:

The first thing you need is a newsletter of some sort. If you don’t have a newsletter or some other reason to email your list, what good will your list do?

This is not a tutorial on setting up your autoresponder. Here is a tutorial if you need help with that.

Once you have all that in place you need to create some emails that will go out to your list, the welcome email and a few follow up emails are fine to start with.

Now what? Now you start getting people to your website and signing up.

Put a sign up form at the bottom of every blog post and ask the reader to sign up. Not using a call to action has been one of my biggest mistakes. Make it easy for people to sign up.

If you use WordPress you can get a nifty little plugin, TinyMCE Signature, that allows you to put your opt-in form on each blog post. I really like it!

Now that all of that is set up, you’re ready to start a weekly action plan to get traffic and subscribers. This is a very basic, yet simple plan. It shouldn’t take any more than an hour per day to implement. You can use it week after week. After this plan becomes easy you can add more tasks to it, write more articles, etc.

Day 1

Write an article for an article directory like ezinearticles, articlesbase or any others you can find.

ArticlesBase has changed their submission rules due to Google’s latest algorithm update. Be sure to read that if you plan to use them. It’s nothing major, but it is important.

Use your resource box to send them to your sign up page with a message like, “John Does runs mydomain.com which specializes in your field. For more information sign up for his/her weekly newsletter by going here*.”

*Make sure the link to your form is in there.

Don’t just send them to your website, send them to your sign up form!

Share this article on Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites. You should also add some tweets that you’ve started a newsletter and link to the sign up form.

Day 2

Write a guest blog post and treat it just like you did for the article directory using your bio to call the reader to action.

Share your guest blog post on social media sites when it’s published.

If you haven’t found a blog to write a guest post for, write another article and submit to a directory.

Day 3

Create a Squidoo lens with relevant information about your topic and put a call to action at the bottom–just like your bio or resource box mentioned above.

Share it on social media sites.

Day 4

Repeat Day 1. This will give you at least two articles per week that you will submit to article directories. If you submitted the first one to ezinearticles, then submit this one to a different directory.

Don’t forget to share on social media sites, promote your newsletter, etc.

Day 5

Comment on relevant blogs to gain exposure and get a link back to your site.

Some blogs are no-follow. You can find out how to check for that here.

Share the blogs you comment on in social media sites. If they’re worth commenting on, they are worth sharing.

Following this plan should be extremely easy, especially if you’re a beginner. If you have any other simple tips for list building, please share them in the comment section.

Whether you are a full time blogger, affiliate, or even both, you know the importance of a great tracking solution and the difference it can make in your business. I’ve seen a lot of different tracking solutions over the years, and many of the work in different ways. Some of them simple redirect and track click amounts, others are more advanced and free, but they will take a portion of your clicks, and other services simply just charge too much.

I had the chance to try out a new service called LinkTrackr, and they actually have a very nice and advanced system. Let’s breakdown their services and what they are all about.

Right when you get to the site you are given a quick run down of how affiliate marketing works, and much easier it could be using LinkTrackr for tracking links and campaigns. The basic concept here is that if you promote your own product, blog or web site using a direct url or a simple redirect, you are potentially missing out on a ton of viral traffic.

Once you sign up for an account it really easy to get started and create a few links. I recently came out with my own free affiliate blogging guide at SixFigureAffiliateBlogging.com. Instead of sending people directly to that site, I can send them to a viral enabled link using LinkTrackr. Here’s how…

The setup is really self explanatory. Just fill in the blank fields with your site info and how you want the viral options to work, then you would be setup with a url like the following: http://moneyreign.linktrackr.com/sfab. You also have the option of using your own domain name for better marketing and branding.

Once you visit that tracking url, you will see that your blog or landing page would have the following viral bar on top of the page. Feel free to try it out and event “tweet” or “facebook like it” using the toolbar.

The top portion of the page may be cut off a bit, but other than that, the site is fully functional and your visitors now have the option to tweet, facebook share or facebook like the post. Even if only 1-3% of your visitors decide to share the content, it could result in a great amount of extra and free viral traffic back to your site.

As a member of LinkTrackr, you will also have access to videos, guides and tutorials on how to use the system, though I picked everything up within minutes of joining the site. You will also have access to other areas of their site which offers a wordpress plugin for link management, pdf reports on blogging and affiliate marketing, and you can also help promote LinkTrackr as an affiliate and earn 40% on all referred sales.

So what does all of this cost? As mentioned, there are a lot of programs out there that offer link management and redirection services, but none that really blew me away. LinkTrackr costs $27 a month (through paypal), but also has a one month trial for only $1. I would recommend you give the one month trial a run and see how much free viral traffic you can bring it.

In the end, I think it really comes down to your web site, offer or blog traffic. If it’s really good content, people are going to want to share it, but if it’s a general offer where you make a quick buck, I wouldn’t expect anyone to share the offer.

Head over to LinkTrackr. Try out the 30 day trial for only a buck, and at the least you can download their free report to discover the “7 Sins of Affiliate Marketing”.

You can upload and then store them to your blog through the upload media option in WordPress and Blogger (and probably other ones too) which is fine. However if you do just host the photo on your blog then you could be losing out on possible traffic to your blog. Let’s say that you took a photo of a dog, like the boxer above.

There are a ton of Photo Hosting Services and as bloggers we should be making use of great photos on our blogs. Photos capture eyeballs quickly because users scanning posts will more likely pause when they see a photo that is compelling. If you take photos then you’re going to need a place to store them.

You can upload and then store them to your blog through the upload media option in WordPress and Blogger (and probably other ones too) which is fine. However if you do just host the photo on your blog then you could be losing out on possible traffic to your blog. Let’s say that you took a photo of a dog, like the boxer above. You upload that photo to your wordpress blog so that you can use it in a blog post. That’s it, you are done. Photo on a blog end of transaction.

But you could get more out of that photo.

Now let’s suppose that you take a photo of that boxer and you upload it to Flickr and you add tags to the photo such as “boxer”, “Sticking out tongue”, “dog”, “funny” and “funny dog”. In the caption of the photo you leave a link to your blog post. This means that if someone was doing a search on Flickr for funny dog photos or sticking out tongues then they may find your photo. They click on the photo and want to see it clearer, on the photo page they see a link to your blog post about your funny dog and they click that link. Bang. Traffic.

Ramp it Up

But suppose that you host that same photo to multiple sites. Flickr, Picasa, Buzznet and Zooomr all give you the option to add in captions which include links. They also allow you to tag the images with keywords. So this means that the users within those communities can easily find your photos and your blog post. The services I listed above are the ones I use on a daily basis to host my daily photo, I also post my photo to Facebook and ShutterCal. Each of them drives traffic to my blog.

Which is my favorite?

Each site has its own strengths and weaknesses.

Facebook – You can add links to your photos but not tag them with keywords, you can tag them with people though. Can’t post photos from Facebook to your blog.

ShutterCal – Simple interface, organizes photos on a day by day basis in a calendar. Only post one photo per day. Sort of the point of the site and all.

Buzznet – Got way too hip and focuses more on really hipster things like music and movies and less on photos. However you can still generate traffic from the site.

Photo-A-Day #1213 08/03/08

Zooomr – Offers free infinite uploads but not a hugely popular platform even though they offer near as many options as Flickr.

Picasa – Free and you can pay for additional space but don’t need to unless you run out but as Google gets bigger you get more space. Plus Picasa has a very cool desktop program that can catalog and sync all your home photo directories. There is also a face detection option which is currently at 8% completed for me because I have over 250,000 photos for the software to sort through.

From 4th Annual Scoop The Herring Day

Flickr – Probably one of the most well known and most used photo hosting sites out there. It integrates with nearly everything and there is a fee if you want to go pro.

I change browsers at least weekly, keep at least one Mac, one Windows machine and one Linux PC around at all times and a two-year cell phone commitment can seem like a prison sentence by month six.

I’m also not the kind of guy who gives glowing reviews, everything is usually tempered with a mix of good and bad, an attempt to find balance and deeper understanding.

But there is at least one service that I am truly grateful for, Diigo.

You see, when most people think of social bookmarking, they think of Delicious due to its popularity. However, for me and my specific needs, Diigo has been a savior, providing a much-needed service that’s simple, reliable and attractive.

If I’m going to rave about any service I use, Diigo would be it and as the U.S. celebrates Thanksgiving, I want to celebrate one of my favorite tech services and how much it has helped me.

Why Diigo?

Diigo, which is pronounced “dee’go”, is a social bookmarking service similar to Delicious in that it allows you to store your bookmarks on the Web. Using either a browser extension or bookmarklet, you can add links to your Diigo account, tag them and share them with your friends on the service.

But if you’re someone who just needs basic functionality in a bookmarking service, Diigo probably is not for you. Delicious is probably going to be less intimidating to use and has a larger userbase. But it is the features beyond the basic set that really make Diigo stand out.

Specifically, there are two features that really make Diigo special.

Annotations: Diigo makes it possible to highlight and add notes to any page that you bookmark and choose who to share those notes with. This is very handy for returning to a specific passage in a page or adding notes to your bookmarks for later. Since annotations can be shared, it’s also great for group research projects.

Lists: As someone who does regular podcasts, Diigo has been a godsend when it comes to creating show notes. It’s lists function allows you to easily create an ordered list of sites, add notes to each article and, as mentioned above, highlight key passages. The lists can be shared easily and even have a “Webslides” feature that allows you to view the pages in order, full screen, saving you from having to open all the links in new tabs.

In short, Diigo is built for capturing, marking up and organizing information, especially in a social environment. For that purpose, it works well and has a feature set I haven’t found elsewhere. It’s been a great find for my podcasting and linkroll work and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Tiny Quibbles

If I had to nitpick the service, I would first note that it can be intimidating to use at first, especially after first installing the Diigo toolbar to find annotations all across most of the more popular sites. Also, with more options come more choices and that can breed confusion. Though Diigo’s bookmark interface isn’t any more complex than Delicious’, the bookmark library can be intimidating with multiple views and tons of options.

Also, Diigo’s tagging system is both weak and inconsistent. Lists, for example, are comma separated tags when you create them but bookmarks themselves are space separated. That, in turn, adds a bit to the confusion and also means that, when trying to tag bookmarks, you’re much more limited, especially when confronted with multi-word tags.

However, the awkward space separated tags is an issue Diigo shares with Delicious and a fairly minor issue in the big scheme of things, especially given the service’s power and features.

Bottom Line

Diigo isn’t a bookmarking service that is for everyone. It’s not for those who just want a simple, basic bookmarking system or feel the need to use the most popular site. Though Diigo’s community is nothing to sneeze at, Delicious is still clearly number one in that area.

However, number one doesn’t necessarily mean best, especially for power users who need the advanced features Diigo provides. If you bookmark a lot of links, need to make notes or otherwise want more features in your bookmarking, Diigo is a good place to look.

However, if you’re a big Delicious fan, there isn’t much to lose. Not only can you import your Delicious links into Diigo, but you can tell Diigo to submit your bookmarks to Delicious, keeping the two in sync that way. If you try it and don’t like it, you can switch back without missing a beat.

All in all, Diigo may not change the world, but it certainly can make your bookmarks much more useful. If you do sign up, be sure to add me, especially if you’re interested in copyright-related links.
