7 Great Niche Markets for Starting a New Blog Today

I have spoken with a lot of new bloggers over the years. It seems that 80% of them all start a make money at home blog.

I am not trying to hate on make money at home blogs (this is one, after all). However, there are a couple of reasons newbies should look for a different niche:

  • It’s hard to stand out, since there are a million make money at home blogs already.
  • It can be hard to write like an expert, since you don’t have any real experience yet.

There are much easier niches to try. Of course, some niches won’t make you much money. You need to try to find the right balance and choose a niche that isn’t too competitive and can still be lucrative.

Here are seven great niche blog markets I recommend.

Frugal Living

The economy is still in the doldrums after the recession. That isn’t good news for the average American, but it’s a huge opportunity for frugal living bloggers!

Louida, the founder of EarningFreeMoney.com is one of the many bloggers that has found success in this niche. According to her income reports, she was already generating about $8,000 a month from the blog while still working her day job.

The video game industry has been booming since the 1980s. It won’t be dying anytime soon. On the contrary, VentureBeat reports that it should grow from $71.3 billion in 2015 to $90.1 in 2020.

You don’t have to spend millions developing a game to get in this action. Lots of game bloggers are making a killing by reviewing games, sharing game hacks and talking about industry news.

Dating is an evergreen niche. People of all ages are seeking companionship. Many of them could use a little guidance. Here is where dating bloggers come in.

Lots of people would like dating advice, such as:

  • Dating site reviews
  • PUA advice
  • Tips for first dates

You can specialize in a specific demographic or dating niche. However, it’s a good idea to find something that has broad appeal so you can get enough readers to make a decent income stream from your blog.

Even with the dating and relationship niche being one of the most competitive ones out there, there is still enough demand for even newbie bloggers and marketers to get a peice of the action. One of my favorite methods for breaking into a touch niche market and grabbing some fresh new links and references is to create a custom infographic and get it shared on other relevant industry sites. This definitely takes some time and effort, but it still works like a charm today!

Senior Living

There are nearly 80 million baby boomers in the United States alone. Baby boomers are looking for lifestyle advice as they reach their Golden Years. Senior living bloggers can share tips on choosing a Medicare plan, living frugally in retirement or avoiding loneliness.

Specific Type of Exercise

There are loads of websites about losing weight and living healthier. If you want to thrive in this niche, you probably need to be more specific.

The best approach is to create a blog about a specific type of exercise. You can blog about taekwondo, CrossFit, swimming or anything else that sparks your interest.

A Certain Type of Diet

Again, the dieting niche is extremely competitive. You probably won’t succeed with a general blog about dieting, unless you are a professional and can write content that really stands out.

Instead, why not write about a specific type of diet? Lots of people are following the paleo, vegan and Mediterranean diets. If you’ve tried them yourself, you may want to blog about them.

DIY Projects

If you enjoy DIY projects around your home, then you can write original blog posts about it. You can even show before and after images of your own home.

Choose a Blogging Niche that You are Interested In

No matter what niche you decide to go with for your blog, make sure it’s one that you at least have an interest in. While you can definitely make money with any type of blog, the ultimate goal is to make money doing something you enjoy and not getting stuck with a new side-project or job you hate. Think about something you have a passion about, how you can provide value to others, then bring your own personal expertise and twist in the process.
