7 Tips to Creating More Blog Content

One great blog isn’t enough to enjoy all the benefits business blogging can offer. It takes both quality and quantity, but ask anyone who’s attempted to start a blog how difficult it is to keep with it and you may be disheartened. Especially for business blogs, this can’t be seen as a hobby that you indulge in when the mood strikes. You need to blog at least twice per week, and ideally daily. Here’s how to write more, more often:

  1. Hire a pro blogger: Okay, this might be seen as a cheat, but it shouldn’t. Only a professional blogger who’s being paid to commit to a certain number of blogs per week will regularly provide the right amount of high quality content. The biggest mistake new business bloggers make is trying to DIY. Leave this to the pros.
  1. Dedicate time to write daily: If you really do want to try this yourself, calendar time every day for blogging. Figure out how long it takes you to write and research a quality blog, and actually carve out that amount of time daily.
  1. Calendar your blogs: It can be frustrating to come up with new, fresh topics on the fly. Instead, create a calendar with content ideas. Evergreen ideas withstand the test of time. You can set up a Google Alert for keywords in your industry, or peruse the news via keyword searches, to get inspiration for new blogs.
  1. Get someone to hold you responsible: It can be a business partner, your intern, or a trusted friend who you know will keep you in line. If you have someone regularly checking in on you to make sure you’re blogging, you’re more likely to keep at it. It’s the same as having a gym buddy.
  1. Read more blogs: Any writer will tell you that the more they read, the more they write—and the better their writing becomes. You’ll find your own voice, but it will be influenced by who you’re reading. To get on the right track, read blogs that complement your business and that inspire you.
  1. Remember that less is more: Not every blog has to be a novella—in fact, shorter is better! Use more white space, keep paragraphs at four sentences maximum, use a lot of images/videos and give yourself a reasonable word count limit.
  1. Know your best time to write: Some people are more energetic in the mornings, some are night writers, and some get inspired while on the morning commute. Identify when you feel most like blogging and set aside that time to do so.

Finally, have a trusted editor. Every single blog needs an editor, ideally a professional one. If that’s not available, get as many eyes as possible on the blog before it’s published. This safety net tears down some of the fears you have of the blog not being “perfect” (spoiler alert: No blog is perfect in the first draft).
