The end goal of all bloggers is to have a successful blog with lots of traffic and providing value in the process. Building a blog that can turn into a business or revenue is an added bonus.

It doesn’t matter what niche you are working in, as long as you are providing valuable resources that answer the questions people are looking for, then you are going to rank in the search results and get repeat traffic.

The Answer is in the Questions

Take WikiHow or WebMD for example. They are a huge site that a ton of people use on a daily basis. Why? Simply because they have answers to all of the questions that people are searching for every day on Google.

These sites have the answers… so they have become the trusted authority sites within their niche.

Web Hosting Authority Giants

The same can be done for a blog in any given niche. Let’s take “how to setup web hosting” for example. Web hosting is extremely saturated and competitive, so it’s not the best example, but it’s one that related to “blogging”, so let’s go with it. HostGator and GoDaddy own this niche… so one might think they rank #1 for “how to setup web hosting“.

Instead we see that has the number one listing, along with quite the lengthy and awesome post on the question. Since they’ve put in the time and effort to create killer content on their site, they’ve become a trusted name and blog that people can trust… yet at the same time competing in the rankings against names like HostGator and GoDaddy (who ranks #2 by the way).

How to Become an Authority

Now that you have a few examples of sites that are doing well simply because they have the answers to questions that people ask on a daily basis, it’s time for you to find what questions to ask and answer on your site.

  1. Find what people are asking in your niche
  2. Look at the competition and what is ranking for these questions
  3. Create your own original content that answers these questions in more detail while also including videos and pictures
  4. Visit sites and forums where people are asking these questions and link back to your site as a resource

Over time your content will gain more attention as being an accurate source and this will eventually lead to you being one of the authority blogs within your niche.

This is very true Zac.
I am also trying to practice the same in order to become an authoritative blogger. My desire or goal is to solve some of these questions people ask daily from the search engine. Hoping it will perfectly work for me.

Great job. I checked out your site and all of the “how to” posts are a great way to accomplish this!

The Hummingbird update reinforces that thinking in terms of queries instead of keywords should be front of mind for content creators.

I love how straight to the point this post is, Zac.

Good point. The hummingbird update/concept is exactly what we are talking about here!

That example with screenshot of the ‘web hosting’ keyword nailed it. So true, google and other search engines have started thinking like human beings and it is time we bloggers too start thinking like humans and lesser like computer :)

Zac – good post. Short and too the point which I like and the four items you have listed, though not mind-bending or surprising are excellent reminders. There’s a lot we read and see on building authority online and so many options and things to try. A few reminders like this are always great to see….

[ Smiles ] I never thought about becoming an authority on a niche, because I do not have one. However, if I choose to become an authority on any category in the future, I would follow your pointers.

All the points are good and worthy. Now with the increasing competition it is mandatory to build an authority website otherwise users have many options. And you have tried to guide through the best of you and that is essential too for us.

I definitely agree- The answer lies in answering people’s problems, questions. The biggest problem is to actually noticed what are the problems and questions of your readers. Then when you find out what’s giving them a headache, offer them a help with a great post.
