Matt Cutts’ Tips for Successful Blog Commenting

Blog commenting is important for the success of any web site or blog. It’s not just about accepting comments on your site, but also how blog comments that you leave on other web sites are perceived by others. This is something I have addressed in the past about BloggingTips.com. With nearly 5,000 live posts on this blog, there are a lot of comments being submit on a daily basis. While I love to see the comments coming in, way too many of them are garbage.

Here are the commenting guidelines I put into affect a while back.

  • All comments must provide value
  • The commenter needs to use their “real name” in the name field
  • An avatar (real person) should be used at all times

It’s not that surprising, but many of these same rules I put in place are also the ones that are being recommended by Matt Cutts.

Blog commenting is a serious business. You can get a great deal of links and traffic back to your web site if you are commenting on other popular web sites and blogs, but that shouldn’t be your only plan on marketing. It’s a great way to grow your brand and exposure yourself to new audiences, but only if you are using the best practices.

Here’s a few examples of the many different types of spammy and time wasting comments received on this blog.

Examples of Spammy Comments

Stop leaving comments on blogs with “buy health insurance” and “get more traffic” as your name. Not only is it attention seeking for your site and brand, but it’s most likely going to get deleted and may even damage your site rankings in the process.
