Can’t Keep Up? 7 Ways to Simplify Using Blogger

These days, it seems like everyone and their mother has a blog – maybe even their grandmother. Nearly everyone has a Google account as well, so it’s no big surprise that Google’s blog publishing service, Blogger, is a natural choice for both first-time and veteran bloggers.

A blog is a personal forum to post thoughts, rants, links, ideas, ideologies, gripes, photos, or anything you want. Your blog is whatever you want it to be. However, what you don’t want it to be is confusing and time-consuming. Below are some helpful tips on how to simplify using Blogger.

1. Use Keyboard Shortcuts

Blogger has several keyboard shortcuts you can use while editing posts. These shortcuts work in most major browsers:

  • control + b = Bold
  • control + i = Italic
  • control + l = Blockquote (when in HTML-mode only)
  • control + z = Undo
  • control + y = Redo
  • control + shift + a = Link
  • control + shift + p = Preview
  • control + d = Save as Draft
  • control + p = Publish Post
  • control + s = Autosave and Keep Editing

2. Add Google Friend Connect

An easy way to attract more eyes to your blog is by connecting with other Google users who have similar interests and would appreciate what you share on your blog. Creating a Friend Connect will allow you to create and add a “members gadget” to your blog that lets visitors register as members of your site.

3. Get Rid of the Toolbar

All newly created Blogger blogs have a toolbar that runs across the blog. To make your blog seem more professional and less cluttered, remove the toolbar by pasting the following under the blog credits in the HTML near the top of the screen:

#navbar-iframe { display: none !important; }

4. Go Mobile

If you’re constantly on the move, chances are you won’t always be near a computer. Download the Blogger App to have blogging power in your pocket 24/7. The Blogger App will allow you to update your blog on the go and offers many of the same features found on the full site.

5. Give Your Blog a Proper Domain Name

Fun fact: You aren’t locked in to that sub-domain name randomly assigned to you by Blogger. Customize a real domain name under the Settings>Publishing tabs and brand your blog the way it deserves to be branded.

6. Get Some Gadgets

There are plenty of gadgets and widgets that you can easily add to your Blogger. The best part about it is that you don’t have to know any programming to add features like photo slide albums, games, instant messaging, and more. A quick Google search will turn up a plethora of free Blogger-friendly widgets.

7. Utilize FeedBurner

FeedBurner, a free service, allows you to place an RSS image on your blog so readers can subscribe to your blog content. FeedBurner also offers a way for your readers to subscribe by email so every time you post, they know about it. Other features include seeing how many blog subscribers you have, which posts are most popular, as well as many other RSS feed statistics.
