Don’t Make These Keyword Mistakes

Posted by on 27th May 2012 | 4 comments

Here’s the thing. You need to get the most from your Internet business experience. That’s the Gospel, plain and simple. That means you can try all the different social media outlets there are—mix and match a little video in there, and even go a little overboard and have some fun with Flash on your website.

Go ahead, try all those things that are new and innovative and when you’re done having a little fling, come back home and get serious with proven techniques like search engine optimized keywords and links. Now more than ever you need to understand how fundamentally important it is to use these techniques effectively.

That means you need to know what not to do as well as what’s effective. Here’s a few common keyword mistakes that can trip you up.

Not checking out the competition. You need to know what’s working and you need to know who is working it. That’s why you should take a peek at competitive websites to see who’s getting better ranking on the search engines and why. If you’ve got a chance, compete with the same keyword. If you’re butting up against sites you don’t have a chance at, using longer keyword phrases with less competition might be the answer.

Obsessing. Very often people do the research and get one keyword or phrase they use over and over throughout the site. Even when you’re not keyword stuffing, you need to have market specific and traffic drawing keywords working to bring the profits in. Putting all your eggs in one basket doesn’t work very well here.

Compromising on Grammar. Although the search engines like Google are catching up to the people who stuff their content full of keywords to the point it sounds like it was written by people without a command of the language, there are still sites out there that defeat the purpose of seo. By choosing an extra keyword or two that compromises good grammar and by proxy professional content, you stand the chance of being passed over or penalized by the search engines. Even worse, you might escape Google’s clutches but find that you don’t have a decent conversion rate for all the traffic you’re getting since poorly written content makes you look unprofessional to possible clients.

Finally, you need to stay on top of the choices that you’ve made to see how well the keywords are working for you. Remember here that the patterns people use to search for goods and services change and you need to be flexible enough to stay on top of all the changes.

Even the search engines change they way they rank pages and sites from time to time and adapting is a big part of what makes a successful business on the Internet that’s keyword optimized flourish.

This is very interesting. I am very confused about all of this stuff.

On the one hand many people, like yourself, talk about keyword research and optimizing for keywords.

But many Internet businesses don’t seem to care about or pay much attention to keywords. Isn’t it ultimately google’s job to determine what your site is about. And isn’t it the case that the more SEO things you do, the more likely you are to be penalized?

Found your blog post/site via Blogengage.com. It showed up in my TWEETs. Just letting you know your money is well spent. Can you tell me if there’s a difference between a “tag” and a “keyword” for search engine purposes?

Hi Robb, interesting post thanks, I really only focus on a few keywords at the most per post and if I cannot fit them in I don’t try. I seem to find that the content I write creates keywords I wasn’t expecting and get ranked highly for them which is a bonus. I recently got ranked for ‘The Story Of Ibiza’ when I was writing a story about a guy called Ibiza Bob lol.

It is more important to us to focus on making the posts readable and understandable, trying to lever in long tail keywords sometimes is just impossible.

    Regards
