While thinking about what to write today, I decided to visit five of my favorite blogs online that talk about marketing and blogging, to see what their 10 most recent articles are so as to get inspiration from these articles. Every single blog I visited had an article talking about writing, marketing etc. whereas none of these blogs had anything to say about one very important subject that all bloggers should be aware of, HEALTH.
In case you don’t know it yet, blogging can be one of the most dangerous kinds of jobs you will do if you’re not careful about how you go about it, which is one of the reasons why you should start taking active measures to ensure you’re always healthy as a blogger.
So that you see what I mean, here are some stats to fire you up.
- Do you know that most of us, bloggers, are now sitting down for more hours than we sleep every day? Sitting increases the risk of death in every individual up to 40%. The amount of time we humans spend sitting has increased significantly over the years due to technology, and the average person now sits for around 9.3 hours in a day. Obviously, most bloggers spend more than this on their chairs every day.
- Do you also know that sitting in front of the screen for longer hours can affect your attention span outside of the screen? e.g if you spend a lot of time in front of your computer screen you will start to find it difficult to concentrate when reading physical books, when sitting for lectures etc.
The reality of life is that you can be the best blogger on earth, you can be the most persuasive marketer, and your reader might be worshiping you like a god, but all that is of no use if you’re not in good health.
Most of us, bloggers, only think about the results we can get in the short term and as a result act carelessly, instead of focusing on where we want our blogging to be in the next year and how much difference being in good health can make in respect to that.
It isn’t too late to make a difference, though, and if you’re ready now, you can still enjoy your good health without sacrificing your blogging. In this article, I will be giving you a few tips to help liberate you from the dangers that come with blogging.
1. Use a Standing Desk
Most of the dangers that come with blogging come as a result of sitting down in front of your computer for longer hours, and while standing up while you work might not be the ultimate solution, it can help reduce your problems to a great extent. Sitting down for anything more than 6 hours in any day increases your chances of dying within 15 years by up to 40%, even if you exercise regularly.
You might be exercising for an hour every day of the week, but that won’t help you a bit if you spend the most of your time sitting down. You can reduce your chances of dying earlier by using a standing desk, because that way, your body will be more active compared to you sitting down.
2. Take Regular Breaks
If you take a look at the stat I cited above in respect to the dangers that come with sitting in front of the screen all day, you might be wondering if there is any solution to it at all. Yes, there is an easy solution – which is to take regular breaks every few minutes while using your computer. It could be a break of 5 minutes for every 25 minutes you are in front of the screen, or it could be a break of 10 minutes for every 50 minutes. During this break you can decide to rest a little, run and exercise yourself, but make sure you do nothing that actively engages your brain.
I also remember reading somewhere (not sure where, though) about another danger that comes with staying longer in front of the screen. There is a number of times your eye is supposed to blink every minute, and within this period a fluid is secreted to help make your eyes active. By staying longer in front of the screen you will reduce the blinking of your eyes, and as a result the secretion of this fluid, thereby leading to more dangers for your eyes.
The more breaks you can take, the better it is for you, so make sure you don’t neglect the importance of taking regular breaks.
Conclusion
It’s great to read about marketing, blogging and all the likes, but you will be almost useless if you’re not in good health. Read and implement the above tips carefully, while at the same time keeping yourself updated with latest health studies so as to secure your blogging feature.

Risk of dying? I’d say 100%. Sitting doesn’t increase the chance of dying because everyone dies at one point in their life (and for most it’s at the end).
I’m not convinced by the sitting = fatal study. Think about human lifespans over the past thousand years. Steadily going up, and those that live longer have always tended to be those in the jobs that let them sit down – kings, judges, etc.
I think having a crappy diet and spending too long working probably does for your life expectancy. If you’re thinking about blogging constantly, and responding to emails you receive at 3am, THEN you’re killing yourself.
This is a good reminder for everyone who sits all day in front of a computer screen, not just bloggers. But I suspect bloggers are a somewhat obsessive lot and get totally absorbed in whatever they’re doing and forget to take breaks — so it’s even more important for them to do so.
Regarding the eye/vision problem, if I may make an additional suggestion, there are glasses you can wear from Gunnar Optiks that are designed to reduce eye strain, dryness, and keep your eyes fresh while working at a computer. Here’s their site if you’re curious: http://gunnars.ojrq.net/c/12417/6708/455
Use longtail keywords in your posts and you can bring search engine users ‘one at a time’. Win their trust by producing a quality piece of copy and they’ll link to you. That is a blogger friendly link bait idea.
I always take regular breaks but I simply won’t function well with a standing desk although I think is the healthiest way to work online.
Yes, I agree with you, longtail keywords are very important to get traffic to a website.
I don’t think I could so dangerous, it’s true taht when you start and see who it all evolves, you get more traffic, more interactions, more links, you might get a bit “crazy” but not as dangerous to get murdered by your aim of blogging…;)
thanks for your post, nice to see your point of view
Hi Bamidele, the ability to maintain a balanced life style in all we do is a great skill. Really, health is wealth. One is only relevant in the business world as long as he is healthy.
standing desk? who uses that? sitting=dying, thats bullshit.
