Even SEO is mentioned here, suppose will be nice to say directly, that increasing of Google PR is a great thing to get more comments.
And not only blog directories, but also SEO-friendly blog catalogues can be used for it.
I think these ideas are more of icing on the cake, so to speak, as far as blog traffic is concerned. I agree that they can boost a blog's traffic, but I still believe that much much more important to the success of a blog is good writing. A lot of blogs abound, and to get ahead of competition, creativity, humor and honesty in writing makes readers return and read your other entries. Proper spelling and grammar don't hurt too. I can't count the number of times I've visited a blog only to be turned off at the very first paragraph because of atrocious grammar. Thanks for sharing!

Daily backlinks is something to do afterward.
@ Rob: I think what Mr. Bamidele was referring to is weekly (or monthly depending on your posting frequency) summaries of popular posts during that duration. How-To-Geek does this very well.
