One of the best ways to generate traffic and viral activity on your blog, is to talk about a controversial subject. One effective way to find controversial topic is to simply turn on the news. Every day a new celebrity says something offensive or a new company is caught doing something fraudulent. Let’s take BP Oil Company for example. Before the oil spill, they were just another massive billion dollar oil company. They had happy fun cartoon commercials about how clean they were… then the oil spill happened. Their logo is so clean and bright looking… but their reputation no longer is. With the recent tragedy or the oil spill, BP needs to shed some new light (or darkness) into their logo. LogoMyWay.com has created a logo design contest for the recreation of BP, after their oil spill.
Instead of sitting back and letting the news and media attack BP, LogoMyWay has thought of a creative and effect way for designers to fight back… and bringing awareness to their design service as well. Designers of all skill levels can join LogoMyWay and submit their own BP logo design. The winner will walk away with $200 and bragging rights.
Let’s get back to the controversy topic and how it can help your blog grow. Let’s take a quick look at Google Trend’s activity of the search phrase “BP” over the past 12 months. You can see the activity has doubled since the spill and it’s just going to get worse.

Using current events and taking immediate action is one of the most effective ways to bring in new search traffic, viral activity and awareness to a site or blog. LogoMyWay was smart in creating a funny and controversial topic for their design contest. This BP logo redesign contest in particular has been viewed over 2800 times, already has over 68 entries… and that’s with over 11 days still remaining before a winner is selected.
Let’s take a look at a few of the creative, funny and new ideas submitted into LogoMyWay’s BP Logo redesign contest.

Submit your own design or create your own logo contest at LogoMyWay, and let me know what you think of the current design submissions.

It's great if a blogger can generate traffic from hitching his/her wagon to a recent controversial topic. It may indeed generate extra traffic. But if your blog niche has nothing to do with current topic being leveraged, then the traffic will not likely convert into regular readers.
If I'm looking for real information about a topic and get tricked into visiting an unrelated blog niche instead, I'm not happy and I'm not coming back.
Create truly helpful, well crafted, timely content, and go after your target audience. That's the way to attract real readers.
The idea behind tapping into popular "news" stories is a great one.
The LogoMyWay was also a great resource. I've been using 99Designs.com but it looks like LogoMyWay.com might be a little less pricey.
Cheers!

Hi guys,
This is a great idea. My favorite logo is #13, because it describes what actually is happening with BP the oil dripping from the spill is CLASSIC!!!
