Gello Jonathan,
This is an excellent breakdown and I very much appreciated reading and bookmarking it. Prior to Twitter and microblogging authority was derived from creating high quality content containing authoritative links that got backlinks. These days we are witnessing the power of social media broadcast range. Tweets, retweets and “likes” are having their effect on linking patterns and the SERPs.

Bloggers don’t appear to be backlinking as frequently as they previously did or in the same way as they used to. We are spending so much time "liking" and "retweeting" etc. and less time on research and writing that the frequency of publication of deeper and meatier articles is decreasing. Facebook "likes" and Twitter retweets seem to be taking the place of backlinks.

We know that search engines are always looking into more ways to make the results better and improve user experience but relevance in search results is diluted by the tsunami of retweeted and reposted snippets we find in the SERPs.

Times they are a changing but writing linkbait is a skill we all need to acquire. Thanks again for being do frank in your Bottom Line section.

Oh my blog, which is pretty much about anything, I wrote one particular post and didn't think anything more about it. Months later, suddenly I'm getting tons of traffic from it, and as I read this I see that it could be perceived as linkbait, though that certainly wasn't my intention. I wrote it on cleavage, and I added images. Just a fluke if you ask me, but it's worked wonders.

I had heard the term link bait before but I wasn't sure exactly what it was. At first I though that was probably something negative but your post cleared that up.
thanks
