20 Free WordPress Themes from 2010

Posted by on 17th May 2010 WordPress Themes 21 comments

As I’m sure you all know, WordPress 3.0 is just around the corner. In fact, two beta versions have been released already, so it won’t be too long before a stable version of everyones favourite blogging platform has been released.

There are some great new features in WordPress 3 including WordPress Multi User integration, additional post types, a new custom menu system, custom taxonomies, background and header image control in the admin area, and a new default theme called Twenty Ten (bye bye Kubrick!).

It’s worth noting that most themes from WP 2.7+ onwards should work with WP 3.0+ with no problems. You may have to follow some integration steps to take advantage of the new features though. Which is why the speed of WordPress themes has not slowed down over the last few months.

In this post I will showing you 20 of the best free WordPress themes which have been released since the start of the year. They should tide you over til WordPress 3.0 is launched :)

While not free ($87) the Thesis theme is pretty cool to work with. I started using it for a friend's non-profit website redesign and then began blogging about how to use it.

This is so good to hear. I was wondering about this.

Most updates are usually in the backend. However, 2.7 brought in a lot of new functions therefore the default templates were updated. A few new functions and features were added in 2.8 and 2.9 too.

If you search on the web you should find some tutorials on how to upgrade your design. :)

    Hey Kevin,

Thanks for this. Most are not free though, but I like vigilance. I need a theme that will allow me to customize my banner. I'm switching from a wordpress domain (leisurelivingblog.wordpress.com) to my own domain (youryogaplace.com) and I want to use my existing banner. Any suggestions on banner-customizable themes?

    Thanks Trina
