I should probably start this article by telling you that I’m writing in the basement of my house in our little cubbyhole
that’s cold even though it’s May here. The reason I’m stuck down here writing this piece and all my other work for a little while is the incredible swell of neighborhood noise that starts up as soon as the weather warms up.
I did have an office on the top floor and even bought an old desk that I enjoyed, but after a while I realized it wasn’t the writing and editing that was the stressful part of my job, but waiting on the next car horn, dog’s bark or child’s playful scream. And all that got me to thinking about all the distractions there are when you work out of the house, and how dealing with those distractions can be one of the biggest obstacles you’ll face when you decide to work on your own.
A Writer’s Erratic Schedule
One of the first things I needed to realize was that other people don’t live by my erratic schedule. It might be different for other kinds of businesses that you can run from your house that have a more nine to five air about them, but my job as a freelance writer on the Internet means that I have no real structure to the deadlines that I need to meet.
That means that one of the first things I found that I could do to deal with the distractions like lawnmowers and loud stereos that thump through the walls was change my schedule and take advantage of the off hours when other people are sleeping or away at work. I also like to get up early in the morning and get some work done and then come back to it later at night, basically when everyone else is just getting up and after they’ve gone back to bed.
Of course you can take advantage of the technology that’s available and when I can set my day out so I can write without needing the Internet, I can actually take the short drive just out of town and work in the peaceful seclusion of the countryside.
And on those days when I like to use my desk that’s upstairs and right in the middle of all the noise on a bad day, I found it’s a good idea to go down to the local industrial supply store and get some heavy-duty earplugs that block the sound.
Regardless of the method I use, I find it’s important to take into account the kind of distractions that can throw me off when I’m trying to work and act accordingly. As everyone who works with on the Internet as a writer knows, any kind of constant noise in the background that you find irritating can be a distraction that can cost you some money in the course of the working day.
You won’t be able to find a totally quiet place to work (he writes as he listens to the washing machine cycle through) but you can experiment to find what’s best for you.

I work in the night when others go to sleep. Or go to my farmhouse on the outskirts of the city during the day as it's very peaceful and quite there.
I tried to buy a country property, but it was more work in the end that my house in the city. Good for you though….
As I write this comment I can hear the little fellah crying as my partner finally gets him off to sleep (he is four months old), and five minutes ago the dog greeted the postman by barking relentlessly until she could no longer hear him.
During the past few months I have been getting up at 4am to do some work; it is the best time for me. The rest of the day is spent grabbing the odd hour or two whenever possible.
That's what I do as well. Break the day up into chunks.
I'm one of those lucky people that doesn't hear outside noise. when I'm "in the zone" nothing comes through. The phrase I hear from my husband most often when I'm at the computer is, "Are you listening?" And of course, I'm usually not because I'm working!
The only noise that affects my work is Internet noise – the ding of email, the lure of HootSuite, the flash of an IM message. Those type of noise are worse for me than physical noise!
I hear you. I just got A BlackBerry and needed to turn all the notifications off.
Yeah, it's hard to find a quiet place for doing works.
I love changing my workplace so it gives me inspiration and motivation to complete the tasks. It often works for me.
I'm waiting for completely mobile Internet.
You won’t be able to find a totally quiet place to work…. Try graveyard and you will found what you are looking for and you will be thankful to live with other living human
Okay. I get it
Argggh! This is one of my worst headaches as a freelancer. Currently my 'office' is a former hall table I jammed between my bathroom vanity and tub (I have a suite-style bathroom). My husband came home the day I set up my new "office" and just looked at me like I'd lost my mind. Now that I've had it a few weeks, he thinks it's a grand idea. We are both amazed at how much work I get done in there. It puts me as far away from the rest of the family as possible and still be in the house. I hear of other people and their weird attic or basement offices all the time, but I think my 'writing throne' really takes the cake on offices of sheer desperation!

Whatever works
You could even run the water as white noise.
This is hilarious and ingenious at the same. However, I can not imagine working in my bathroom! Not only do we have a suite but I am not even going to tell you how dirty it can get with two teenagers in the house! LOL
oops – I meant DO NOT have a suite.
Oh, listen, my kids' bathroom is at the other end of the house. There is NO WAY I could put an office space in a bathroom with them. The cool thing about my little office is at night my husband can be in our room watching television and it's kind of like we're still hanging out together. Plus, we have a home office desk in our bedroom where we do our bills and such, and my husband's computer is there. So, basically I commandeered a little corner of the house not just to work, but to be 'my spot'. There's a little bath-style window right beside me, and until our southeastern US states start to heat up
beyond bearing (like, next week), I can leave the windows open and listen to the birds in my semi-rural neighborhood.
I'm okay with noises, but I sure could do without people dropping in and thinking I'm supposed to chat with them. I get irritated and then my concentration is derailed for quite awhile.
or telemarketers
Hi guys,
Rob I feel for you, because you are having all of these annoying distractions. I have been blessed to not have too many unwelcoming distractions. As I was reading your blog I thought that maybe it will be better for you to work while everyone is sleeping like the wee hours in the morning (12-5am).
Kind regards,
Sam

It is amazing how something as simple as sound can mess with your concentration.
My workspace has been the dining room table at my parent's place for the past 3 weeks while I search for an apartment. Everyone who walks past (all 4 other family members) seem to have some titbit of news or question they want to share with me. My earphones don't deter them in the slightest.
Working late at night is out because my family are night owls, and I haven't yet managed to peel myself out of bed early enough in the morning to use the silence.
I will definitely savour my new workspace when I move into my apartment next week. I have a new appreciation for solitude!
By the way, congratulations on the sheer brilliance of your bathroom idea, Trina.
Thank you, thank you, Jessica.
Yesterday, after I posted here, I came across a discussion in a blog about time management and setting business hours. So, I made myself a very professional business sign (from my very own professional printer, lol) and hung it above my desk. It really serves more as a reminder to me, since I have now cordoned off my area with murder-scene tape, ha. But seriously, I think of it as one of those little mind tricks we play on ourselves…I hope it will remind me to stay on track and, if any of my family does see it, they'll get the hint. Which they won't. Sigh.
take advantage of the technology that’s available and when I can set my day out so I can write without needing the Internet
It is a very difficult for me to get up early in the morning and start working.I do work at night because as you was stating that is the only peaceful time I can get
.
I live in an apartment complex–plenty of distracting noise here.
My youngest daughter just moved in with us until she gets on her feet again. More noise I'm not used to.
But, I've listened to Iron Maiden enough while I work that I can now put on headphones, turn it up pretty loud and still work. This doesn't work every time, but it does help.
I try to get most of my freelance work done by 10:00 while the house is still quiet. It doesn't give me the working hours I need, but I can usually revise and edit with some noise.
Good post Rob. I've been feeling this same thing for a few weeks. I'm glad someone else shared their feelings/frustrations.
Hi Patti.
I even got a real estate agent and went to look at some country properties. All were too old and needed too much work. Ahh well, there's always that VW bus and the open road one day.
I remember the VW bus and still think you should do that. That'd be so cool. You could sound proof it too.
