Free Writing Prompts

Free writing is a great way to improve your writing skills and get the creative juices flowing. Many times, when you try to force your brain to focus on a topic or idea it shuts down and leaves you hanging there, unable to find the right words. By doing free writing exercises with no end in mind and just letting your muse run wild, you free your mind from that sludge.

Some writers have the ability to just start free writing without a prompt, but if you’re really stuck in that writer’s sludge, it may help to find prompts to get you started.

Maybe you aren’t stuck trying to find the right words; maybe you’re just a little bored with the material you’re working on and need a creative break. Free writing is also great for those times too. Free writing can be done daily to help get you in the mood for writing, to get those cranial muscles worked out, and to help relieve stress if you’re feeling overwhelmed.

Take 10 minutes each day to do some free writing. On days that you have more free time–go for it and see how much you can write.

The rules are simple: Don’t write with an end in mind or any direction–just write organically. Don’t worry about sentence structure, grammar, punctuation or misspelled words–just write. Some of these are one line prompts that you can finish; some are prompts for descriptive writing.

  • It was a most unusual day. I was awakened by the sound of…
  • Last night I encountered the strangest thing on my way home from…
  • As dark clouds rolled in over the horizon, I remember thinking to myself…
  • After Grandmother died, we were cleaning out her attic. I found a fascinating book about…
  • The crowd went wild as the band came on stage. The opening number was…
  • “Hey man, did you see what just happened?”
  • Describe a wolfman fairy.
  • Describe a disfigured leprechaun.
  • Describe how the world looks from the viewpoint of a fire hydrant.

Free writing should be fun. Let your imagination run wild and free. Don’t worry about structure or anything else. Just get the creative juices flowing or the writing mindset if fiction isn’t your genre. All writers need to engage in fun writing. It keeps the craft fresh and alive and helps you hone your writing skills.

Give it a try!

I agree with you that free writing is fun! I once learn how to blog and sometimes I do have lack of ideas and try to push my brain to create a content. But somehow I discover that I don't have to make any planning to write on my personal blog and I do write freely when I wanted to and the result is, I write better each day. :)
