Is it possible to read too many blogs?
When thinking of what to talk about for this blogging tips.com post I began to panic because I was not coming up with any ideas. I thought that I’d go and read a few blogs from my feed reader including my list of virtual mentors. Virtual Mentors (list is on my right sidebar on my blog) are those people who are attaining a level of recognition and success online or in their personal lives that I wish to attain. I learn from them and they help me grow as a person and blogger. Most days.
On those days when I am feeling like whatever I write is garbage it doesn’t help me to read posts by people who are so prolific and inspiring. I begin to feel like whatever I’m going to write doesn’t at all matter because I won’t ever get to that same level. I wonder where they got their inspiration and whatever I write would pale in comparison to what they just wrote.
That thinking is crap!
The thing is that while you or I may not be on the same level as A list bloggers, or B, C, and D list ones for that matter, it doesn’t mean that what we are saying isn’t important. I think that we can get hung up on being intimidated by the success we see from others. Many of the people I read have at least 12 comments on each post moments after it is posted and RT counts in the 100s. That is intimidating. But, look at it this way. Every single one of these people had to start somewhere and sometime. The biggest thing they have on their side is time and a large body of work. But they had to get there day by day like anyone else.
What can you do today to improve your posts?
Read blogs – Ironically, read more blog posts. The thing is, don’t go reading and then compare yourself to the other blogger. Read each post and come up with ideas that you can use for yourself as jumping off points for your own posts. When you do this make sure you refer back to the post where you got inspiration. Do this for two reasons, one it is good karma and two that good karma may get you noticed by the original blogger where you got your inspiration.
Keep a notebook – You can either keep an open file where you write out ideas for posts or a physical notebook you can write in with a pen. By having some ideas that you can go to when you are in a writing drought you can get out of it quickly by picking one of those topics.
Wipe out distractions – Turn off Facebook, Twitter, the TV and any other alerts, distractions and roadblocks to focus. Being able to really focus on what you want to say will allow you to write highly readable posts. If you are unable to focus on what you are writing understand that the people reading it won’t be able to focus on it either.
What are your thoughts? What are ways to motivate yourself when faced with feeling not so confident? What keeps you keeping on?

I agree with you Ben, I currently have 160 RSS subscriptions on my NetNewsWire, and while I don't read everything that ends up in my RSS catcher I pay attention to whatever interest me the most. Af for the Journal, does a software journal counts? I'm using MacJournal, I got this on the last MacHeist and I'm loving it.
Luis,
A software journal certainly does count. you've got quite a few subs there, impressive.
I agree with the "that thinking is crap" section, couldn't be more true. I think the biggest issue with many bloggers, is that they're trying to fit in, rather than just doing what they wanna do, just because. For instance, I write about the flash game industry, it's what I do, it's what I'm into, I know what I'm talking about. I think the key point is to not compare yourself to other bloggers of the same subject, but rather to learn from them, and just do your own thing; you'll grow in time, just as they did.
Porter,
Exactly. For my personal blog I just write about my family life and make it interesting, my special feature is my daily photos and because of that I always have something to write about. I never try for SEO, or SERPS or any other acronym I just write and tag the post with what I write about.
I agree with the “What can you do today to improve your posts?” section, couldn’t be more true.
DMT,
So can you answer the question?
Good tips.I only the inspiration now, darn !
Thanks !
Kunalex,
You are welcome.
I agree with finding your own voice and stand. Comparing yourself to others is just too stressful and can cause writer's block.
I try to read lots of blogs, and leave comments too. I admit, I tend to focus on the blogs that are more friendly towards people leaving comments – using either comluv, dofollow or both. Plenty of very good blogs around that do that.
BTW, I disagree when it comes to reducing "distractions". I think this piece of advice may apply only to men
Anne,
Maybe men do need to turn off the distractions or maybe we don't. We certainly are good at tuning out our wives.
I need to go and leave many more comments on other blogs. I read the blogs but sometimes don't feel I have anything to contribute there. I'm great at responding to comments that other people leave on my blogs but initiating the conversation doesn't seem to be my strength.
Great post Ben! One of my posts this week will cover distractions and the things we allow to get in the way of our writing career. I'll be stepping on my own toes for sure.
Thanks for sharing!
Patti,
I will have to check out that post. So many distractions out there. Thanks for leaving a comment here.
Hi guys,
What motivates me when I'm not feeling as confident is reading inspirational books. I have a whole lot of them and they help me out a whole lot. Then after I get through reading I blog about what I read.
Kind regards,
Sam
X
Sam,
Inspirational books are a good place to look. Thanks for the idea.
I have been reading blogs all day and maybe it is to much!
David,
Maybe it might be too much. Might not.
Hi Ben,
I read somewhere that comparing ourselves to others is kind of unwise especially when it comes to abilities etc.
Learning from others on the other hand is OK as long as we retain our personality.
Being a copy cat is silly to put it mildly.
When I'm not sure that what I can write at the moment is something that people will want to read I write a draft of it and then read it the next day.
If it turns out that it's readable I use it. If not I write something else.
The worst thing is to get paralyzed and do nothing. Doing nothing is OK after having worked for several days in order to relax and to gather new energy.
I agree with your saying that the A and B bloggers have a body of work to back them up and if we are beginners, we have to do the work first.
Vance
Vance,
Excellent points. I agree that doing nothing is the worst. Keep on working is the best thing to do.
Anything too much can stunt you, let alone Blogs :p
NPXP,
Good point.
I love to work with people. Having a bloggers group of friends can be the same as working in a team. Thats a good motivation to start with..
I keep a "living" document in Google docs. As well as when I am thinking of a new idea in a meeting, class on a long drive I quickly jot down the note and draw a glowing light bulb next to it to mark it is a "bright idea".
