TweetMeme is a hugely popular plug-in because it is so easy to use. It is easy for you to install and easy for your readers to use to retweet your posts. It may be too easy because so many people just install it and never look at the options available to them.
Here is the Issue
When you simply install TweetMeme and you don’t get into the settings then every RT will show up as “RT @tweetmeme… your blog post and link“. So, when someone re-tweets your post you don’t get the mention in the twitter stream. So their followers don’t know that you were the one who wrote the post. If you want the credit then you need to change the attribution field in the TweetMeme settings to your twitter id. That way when someone clicks the TweetMeme Retweet button you see “RT @BenSpark… my post and link“.
Edit your TweetMeme Options in WordPress
I wrote about this on my blog BenSpark.com in post titled You Are Using TweetMeme Wrong. That post explains thoroughly how to make changes and edits to TweetMeme on your WordPress Blog. After I wrote that post I was on a mission to educate as many people as I could about this error that many were perpetuating. The thing is, many people are using TweetMeme on Blogger. With Blogger things are a little different. I didn’t know how to make things work in Blogger so I went and looked into the issue.
Edit your TweetMeme Options in Blogger
I believe that this will work for any blogging platform that you use where you post this TweetMeme code:
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://tweetmeme.com/i/scripts/button.js"></script>
However, if you simply attach this code then you get the same issue as I described above. You have to add some additional code to make this TweetMeme button your own.
All you need to do to get the TweetMeme button is install this code below:
<script type="text/javascript"> tweetmeme_source = 'tweetmeme'; </script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://tweetmeme.com/i/scripts/button.js"></script>
Once you install this you just need to change this line of code tweetmeme_source = ‘tweetmeme’; to tweetmeme_source = ‘Your Twitter Name’. Once you do that you are good to go. Now when people use your TweetMeme button you will get the credit for the posts that you write.
For more options to edit the code for the TweetMeme button please check out the TweetMeme help page.

Thanks for the tip. I just added the Tweetmeme plugin a few days ago and as you mentioned it set up so quickly and easily I didn't even bother to check the settings. After reading your post I added my username and also reviewed all the other available settings.
I didn't make any other changes, but at least now I know there are other easily changed options like what pages I'd like to display tweetmeme and where on the page I'd like it displayed.
Colby,
Glad that this post was helpful for to you. Most folks do exactly what you do. Luckily the fix is a simple one.
I hate it when people install this plugin and don't bother to change the @reply section, great post! (retweeted LOL)
Keith,
That is exactly why I wrote this.
Thanks for the tip. I just changed mine. I wondered why I wasn't seeing any of my retweets showing up on my Twitter.
Brian,
It took me a little while to figure out why this was happening and when it did I was happy to share with everyone.
For this matter, once I discussed with one of my friends, not only about the content you talked about, but also to how to improve and develop, but no results. So I am deeply moved by what you said today.
This is exactly the information I was looking for! I admit I am a set it and forget TweetMeme culprit. Thanks for posting the code you saved me a hour worth of headaches!
