You’re Not Too Old Until You Think You’re Too Old

Posted by on 19th Feb 2010 Writing 9 comments

I’m going to divulge a little secret today–I’m almost 43 and it’s still my dream to publish a novel. After I passed the mid-twenties mark I thought of myself as too old and I thought that for many years. One day it dawned on me that a person isn’t too old until they think they’re too old. So while I’m a late bloomer in the novel publishing world, I don’t consider myself too old anymore.

I’ve also felt I was too old to learn to play piano. Technically, to be a concert pianist, well I’m probably past the age of ever doing that–but I’m not too old to learn. So, at 42 I’ve taken up piano.

Okay, don’t reveal my age to anyone else. It’s our secret.

Blogging tends to lean towards the younger generation. They’ve gotten on board at a good time. But, I do see many bloggers my age and older, who are starting to build a successful career or online business. Twenty years ago it was unheard of that people in their 40′s should start a new career or business venture–they were considered too old to take that path. But times have changed and older people are actually “younger” these days than they were back then.

This post will be shorter than usual, but I want to inspire you, no matter what age you’re at in life, that dreams and goals can still be strived for. Don’t give up just because you think you’re too old to ever reach the success you desire or to publish your first novel. You’re never too old until you start thinking you’re too old.

Blogging and the Internet have opened up many opportunities for the older generation. You have every right to grab a piece of that pie for yourself–start writing, start blogging and never grow old before your time.

I just turned 59 and now I am really feeling I am hitting my stride. My art and photography is dvelopinmg very well and I even manage a sizeable readership of over 1,000.

I think it only gets better and I do remember how hard it was to figure what I really enjoyed when I was younger.

Well, my dear, I'm a little older (chronologically speaking) than those two gentlemen and I don't ever want to stop learning new things. Blogging is the most fun I've had in a long time and I actually believe that I'm getting younger because of it. Pretty nifty stuff. This is a great post with a great message.

Just reading this makes me feel old, and trust me, we're the same age! I wouldn't say that younger people have the upper hand. Not in the least. We have more experience that we can blog about. That's what I do in my niche. If it wasn't for 20 years of experience in my field I would never be able to talk about the things I do. So for me, I'm happy I have real life that I can talk about. We are the teachers… Let us teach! :)

    Nice post, Patti.

Did you read about John Lowe? He took up ballet when he was 79 – he got his first starring role when he was 88 – he's still dancing at 90. A real inspiration.

I'm not old. I'm not old. I'm not old.

Yeah, it's a good motivation for us as some people might get their spirit sown just because they are thinking they are too old to do things

    Argh!!!, This post annoys me.

Why?, because I haven't got the time or need to even reflect on how old you are or I am. We just get on with a great and fulfilling life. Age has nothing to do with anything. You can be old and risk adverse at 20 and a "young" adventurer at 80.

(good luck with the book and piano)

I'm a late bloomer in every sense of the word!!! Though am very young compared to other commenters here!

That doesn't mean I don't feel old at times like when I decided to go back to college.

Its just a question of being interested in learning new things, explore ideas and having projects to keep you from being bored and be boring! Its all in the head!
