I don't sign-up to many newsletters because of the problems mentioned above. However, I am very proud of my own blog's newsletter as I take an hour or two to come up with something original that isn't on my site. And if I could do more, I'll offer them special things and features that the others who don't subscribe can't get. I agree with the points that you'd mentioned above. For me, I provide subscription service for my readers only if they want to get latest update of my site to their emails. Nothing more than that.

Personally I get tired of all the plain text ones and a little bit of imagery wouldn't go astray. Even if it's just a logo or maybe an image of yourself if you want to make it a bit personal.
