I for one really feel you on this! I don't sign-up to many newsletters because of the problems mentioned above. However, I am very proud of my own blog's newsletter as I take an hour or two to come up with something original that isn't on my site. So, thank you for your honesty and you've given me even more reason to deliver something awesome in my newsletter.

Lately, I don't subscribe any newsletter anymore and I keep unsubscribing them. Like what you said, every day is a special offer then everyday with promoting email. No tips, no new stuff.

Yes, the subscribers should get what they supposed to get - special links, promotions, discounts or whatever special because they're your loyal subscriber. Not the junk and cheap salesletter.

I agree with the points that you'd mentioned above. For me, I provide subscription service for my readers only if they want to get latest update of my site to their emails. Nothing more than that.

And if I could do more, I'll offer them special things and features that the others who don't subscribe can't get.

#6 absolutely hit the nail on the head! Whoever "they" are who claim that a longer sales letter will get sales more quickly is simply wrong, IMHO. You want me to buy something? Then tell me what it is and why I need it in a few paragraphs, show me a picture (or two, if necessary) and give me the price and ordering information. Otherwise, don't waste your time and mine.

Enjoyed the post. Thanks!

Nice post. I currently have a newsletter but I'll admit not much effort has been put up to it. I've just bought into the 'you must have an email list from the start' so I set one up with a few follow up emails.

What are some of your favourite examples of great newsletters you receive? Does design matter to you or is plain text fine?

Personally I get tired of all the plain text ones and a little bit of imagery wouldn't go astray. Even if it's just a logo or maybe an image of yourself if you want to make it a bit personal.
