Simler is a social messaging platform that allows you to connect with those who have the same types of interests as you. What makes Simler so unique is the ability to link like-minded users together via their tagging system. Upon joining Simler, users are asked to add tags to their account that describe and interest them; there is an infinite amount of tags that you can add. Many tags have already been created and upon typing, suggestions will automatically pop up. You can choose to add one of the suggestions or create your own new tag. Each tag you add is basically like a group that you’re joining relating to that one specific topic. Everyone that adds that tag to their account will be able to connect and contribute in that tag’s discussion area.
The more tags you add, the better your experience will be since you’ll be able to connect with more users. When browsing around the site and through different tags, you will notice that there are two different colored tags. A light grey tag means that you haven’t added that tag to your account. Scrolling over it will reveal a plus sign that, when clicked, will let you add it to your account. A pink tag is one that has already been added to your account. You can also add tags as favorites by clicking on the star to the right of the tag. In doing this (adding a tag as a favorite), every post added to that tag will be shown in your “home” stream (more details below) – even from people who aren’t on your friends’ list. This is an even better way to find people you have things in common with, since you’ll be able to compare favorite interests as opposed to general interests.
You can of course add users as friends on Simler as well. When viewing the “people” section of the site, there are many different ways to find other users. You can choose different filter options in which to display them. You can even select the minimum amount of tags that you want to have in common with a user. You can then sort users by: the ones that are most simler to you (who have the most tags in common); the ones that have the most friends in common with you; the ones closer (in distance) to you; the ones who have most recently joined the site; or the ones who have most recently been active.
The home page has four different streams that you can view. The “home” stream are posts that you make and posts that your friends make on mutual tags only. The “my tags” stream shows all posts that have been made to tags that you’ve added to your account. In this stream, it doesn’t matter if someone is your friend or not – you’ll see all posts that have been made on your tags from both friends and non-friends. The “my friends” stream shows all posts from your friends only to their tags. So here, it doesn’t matter if you’ve added the tag to your account or not – you’ll see all posts that have been made to your friends’ tags. Lastly there’s the “private” stream which is where all private messages from your friends will go. On each of these streams, you can also add comments, “like” a post, and report a post. You can then sort each stream by new posts or new comments.
There’s also some great syntax features when it comes to creating posts on Simler. Adding a link to your post will embed it and turn it into a hyperlink once posted. There’s also a special way to reference other tags and users in your posts. If you wanted to link to another tag for other users to check out, you simply use brackets []. So, if you wanted to link to the Facebook tag you’d add [Facebook] in your post. In order to link to other Simler users, you’d need to add ~username. Additionally, you can reference Twitter from within your discussions on Simler as well. With the use of a hashtag (#) you can reference anything from Twitter Search. For instance, adding #Facebook in a post would link to #Facebook on Twitter search. What’s even more cool is that you can even @mention people on Twitter in your Simler posts by posting @username.
The fun doesn’t stop there; there’s still lots of other great things going on over as Simler like contests and giveaways. So, be sure to stop by and take a look around whenever you get a chance. I’m sure you’ll definitely a pleasant experience. If you decide to join, also feel free to add me as a friend. What are your thoughts on Simler?
