I get slightly annoyed though because a lot of the time I go over by only a few characters and theres no way to shorten the tweet

Another option is "Tweet Press" http://140plus.com - it posts a long tweet, like Twitlonger, the all these long tweets are automatically organized into a blog format and optionally grouped by hashtag.

I feel you but we now have lots of users joining Twitter that don't really understand how to use it. Especially celebrities……. it can get annoying.

Me neither but some people apparently use Twitter as more of like a blog and like to post LONG messages. I once saw one on TwitLonger that was longer than most average blog posts!

This is a nice alternative for those who want to tweet a longer text or etc. but I guess that the limited space for characters is a unique element for Twitter. I would say that a tweet is an art because it's about you simplify what do u want to say or spread in just a few words.

By the way, these sites are interesting and good alternatives for those who wanna use the described functions. Keep up!

I agree with the last poster. I find it obnoxious to get numerous broken up tweets, broken off tweets, or tweets that obviously don't get to the point.

And I'm not going to reconstruct 140-character tweets to make them shorter, those tweets won't get retweeted by me!

I'm with you on this. Twitter is 140 characters. Usually when I want to tweet more than I can in 140 characters, I find a way to be more succinct in my writing and manage quite well. There is some skill to getting a tweet right and I think it's worth developing. Save your words for blogging.

uuuuuuuuuh… I feel compelled to mention that the whole purpose of Twitter is microblogging. The point is to say what you need to say inside of 140 characters. They are short, sweet, and to the point. When I want to post longer messages, I post to Facebook – or I email.

I don't think I'd enjoy receiving paragraphs of text from people in my Twitter stream – especially when many people Tweet person-to-person conversations back and forth.
