Patricia VennesYour Blog: A Few Notes For Survival

bloggingBlogging Tips is all about tips to help your blog thrive. There are marketing tips, writing tips, application tips, and plugins. There is even useful information on this site about more technical things such as coding, links, SEO, and software. It’s easy to say that if you need to make your blog better this site has it.

But what about tips on what not to do? Most of us bloggers just do what we do and hope that it sounds good, or, if you blog for someone else, pray that you get your piece done before deadline. This got me thinking: if you are writing a blog about something that you truly enjoy then shouldn’t you watch out for the things that you should NOT do under any circumstance?

The easy answer is yes. Below I’ve made a list of a few things you should watch out for when writing your blog.

Don’t blog when:

You’re hungry (unless you want your post to become a garbled mess of GIVE ME FOOD NOW)

You’re mad (you might say something that you will regret later such as I meant to do that you stupid idiot!)

You’ve been drinking (for obvious reasons “juz becuz Iz want TWO!”)

You only have ten minutes to spare or ten minutes until you need to post (your fingers might type that fast, but are you really that smart?)

You really don’t want to (even if you are a pessimistic person, people reading your blog don’t care if you think that all of the stupid people should be thrown into a giant pit, they come to your site to read about daisies!)

Talking to your friends about, um, private bedroom activities (somehow it will seem like a good idea to write about these conversations for your blog but it is not a good idea)

It might be okay to do these things, but it’s probably not a good idea before you blog:

Become emotionally involved in something that takes away all of your concentration ~ aka family drama (insert stupid Thanksgiving fiasco here involving a drunken idiot and a hot plate with the inevitable trip to the ER)

Ride a motorcycle for the first time and get caught up in a chain-link fence (and yes I am speaking from experience)

Decide it’s actually a great idea to play in the snow for a few hours leaving you twenty minutes to write (though this might sound fun, if you don’t have time to write your blog, when you are finished with the snow the dexterity in your fingers will be nil)

Have in-laws over. I don’t think I need to say anything more about this tip, but if your in-laws are wonderful then I’ve got a few that you can have.

What all of this really comes down to is this: just write. People go to your site to read what you have to say, so give them what you want and not a fluff piece that even your number one fan will appreciate.

Note: This list is just a comical approach to blog writing. If you are able to write fantastically while doing any of the above, please let me know about your story, I always enjoy a good laugh.

    Witty but true. Great!

  2. the bottom line is to be passionate towards your blog and continue writing at regular intervals

  3. Fatin Pauzi says:

Yes, I agree with what you are saying. Moreover, I couldn’t even start to write an article for blogging whenever my emotion is unstable.

  4. David Walker says:

Thank you Patricia; very funny but full of advice worth listening to.
I agree with not blogging when I’m hungry and certainly not going to the supermarket either ;)

The anger bit is the one we regret the most and can do the least to rectify because we’ve hurt someone’s feelings, publicly and it’s a ‘can’t’ un-do. I try not to write then, and use posts I’d saved for a rainy day.

Another for the list is not to sign into any distractions while working like Skype, Facebook, Twitter..

  5. Ha ha,
    i absolutely agree with you.

  6. Well i really like the points you mention in “don’t blog when”. Thanks for sharing this information. :)

  7. Great to know about this.I agree.

    Patricia,
Thanks for the sense of humor! I was pleasantly surprised by this post, expecting the usual dry, strictly-business tips but got a chuckle instead. Not to say you dont make good points as well.
I think it also brings the point – write with a mild sense of humor – I always find blog posts that are honest with a little levity are the most enjoyable to read.

  9. That whole “in-laws” thing is SOOO true… I get the “do you have to be doing that now” look- to which I answer by taking my computer and begin bathroom blogging. ;)

  10. I love What Ryan Erickson had so say, that made me lol.
