How social media optimisation is useful?

We would be poignant to begin by answering the question what is social media optimisation? The answer is not particularly complex, it is a method for attracting visitors to a website using various social medias. Social medias include blogs, social networks, video sharing websites, photo sharing websites and of course social bookmarks. These strategies are often considered spam if not done correctly and even when they are implemented in an ethical manner are still slightly on the grey hat side of things. It is absolutely paramount to get this sort of internet marketing right.

SMO is different to SEO!

SMO is more focused on improving your linkability in a different manner; SEO would encourage you to write a great piece of content which is key word driven and then bury it so nobody can pinch it and cause you penalties, whereas SMO will encourage you to share your website. For example youtube, this is a prime example, it encourages others to use your video which of course increases your videos popularity and the value of it as a link to your site. Social Media Optimisation is all about getting other webmasters and internet users to market your site for you in many respects.

You want your content to travel, this is quite weird when you think in terms of SEO, and content travelling is bad right? The big G will penalise you for duplication right? Well this is in some ways the case, but the benefits far outweigh the penalties and there are ways to avoid any duplication penalty all together, press releases and content that you write solely on a social networking or bookmarking site can travel around and gain you many valuable backlinks. So you want to help your content travel not hinder it.

Blogs are perhaps the biggest powerhouse in this category, they provide you with links to comment, and the RSS feeds can be instrumental in helping your content travel. Not only does adding a blog give your site the benefit of easy to write content which is of course great for SEO it is often the easiest type of content to bookmark also is the most widely read style of content on the internet and if that wasn’t enough it’s great link bait.

Make it easy to bookmark

Adding bookmark buttons to your website is a great investment, encouraging people to bookmark your site is a very good idea because generally people will not bother to bookmark your site without a gentle nudge. Though SBMs aren’t great as SEO backlinks they can drive a lot of traffic to your site if your site becomes popular on one of the larger networks like delicious or stumble upon.
