Patricia VennesYour Blog: The Holidays

holiday_card-1This time of year is sadly not pro-blogging because there are so many other things to do. You have to make food, eat a lot of food, buy too many things, worry about your credit card bill, fret over the in-laws that you hate (then worry about what to get those in-laws as a present, when you really just want to buy them a diet book), and so much more. All of this leads to less time to spend on your blog which can lead to self loathing and random negative comments about your lack of posting.

What can you do to save yourself from the embarrassing post that says “Um, I will be posting some good things soon, but I’m really busy”? Plan ahead! As writers planning ahead is a joke to say the least, but if you want to keep your readers happy and continue to come back for more, you have to get ready. If you can plan a few posts ahead of time and schedule the time that they will appear on your site, you will save yourself time and give yourself extra time to eat all of the food that’s calling your name from the fridge. If you can’t seem to write the posts that need to get written, then at least form ideas that you can write about for the next couple of weeks so you aren’t starving for inspiration.

If you know you aren’t going to write, then be honest. Let your readers know that you will be going on holiday. Make a point to check in on your site even if you aren’t going to actively create new posts. Don’t let your down time become the death of your blog just because you have other things to accomplish.

Instead of becoming bombarded with the extra hassle of the holidays, incorporate the messes that you encounter into your blog. Funny mishaps can be a good way to start a post that can help you blend into a topic more suitable to your site. For example you can become a great listener at the dinner table and let Uncle Jed’s yearly story about mud wrestling with a hundred pound hog lead into a post about enjoyable new electronics for teens that keep them away from pork and puddles. You can do this or do something a little different. My site is all about ranting and raving (writing ranting and raving that is though it’s mostly just whatever I have to say), so to incorporate holiday fiasco’s into my blog I can help the process by talking to family and friends about my blog then blog about their snide comments.

Do whatever you can to keep your readers with you through the holidays. It will be hard to post on a regular bases if you have other things going on, but let your blog be the outlet that readers seek from their family drama.

Note: the picture included in the post does not reflect my feelings about the holidays.

Really agree. Sometimes it’s hard to say but I agree that the readers have the right to know if we’re on vacation or too busy to write the posts. Nice aticle. You make me realized of my mistake!
