Good Content Writing: Three Solid Tips

Posted by on 1st Nov 2009 Blogging 17 comments

generic 20There are many discussions about what you need to get your blog noticed. Some say social media is the way to go and others are sure that linking and keywords make all the difference. It doesn’t matter what side of that fence you’re on in that or any other debate that focuses on what’s best for your blog, everyone agrees that one of the most important factors that needs to be considered is content. Good content writing in particular.

Fair enough, you might say, but what really makes for good content writing? As you might imagine that’s another topic of hot debate depending on where you look for the answers. However, there are some agreed on rules that are generally accepted by all writers in general and content writers specifically.

To start, make no mistake about the terms. Content writing is what you do no matter what your blog is about. It doesn’t matter whether you’re writing about the Grandma’s favorite recipes or the state of the health insurance industry in America, it’s all web content. Some of the rules that make it effective are the same as with its print cousin and some are different.

Write in Short Blocks Of Text

I just read an article that stated any paragraph over five sentences long is too bulky for the Web. You need to keep things short and sweet for readers to entice them to stay before they’ve even read a word of your blog. Remember that every visitor to your site has the ability to click away if they don’t like what they see. Big blocks of text look intimidating and turn them off. Try to remember those text books you needed to read in school and how imposing they could be.

Get Right To The Point

Don’t waste time and meander around. Mean what you say and say what you mean. If you’ve got a great idea in your head or even just a great section of a bigger thought all mapped out, take some time to think about how you want to write it down before you start. Organized thoughts make for economical writing. When you’re trying to sound like an expert on any given subject, getting right to the point with concise brevity impresses readers and lets them know you really know what you’re talking about.

Don’t Be Too Formal

Good content writing has ebb and flow as well as a rhythm almost like poetry. Read something from the Internet that you’re especially fond of. Something that has stuck with you. Chances are there’s a rhythm and tone to the writing that approaches conversational.

The best content writing makes you feel like you’re having a conversation with the writer and that he or she knows everything there is to know about the subject at hand.  You can spend hours on the design and templates that you use for your blog. You can hire someone to make sure that you get all the best search engine optimization techniques, but in the end you’ll need to be sure that you’ve mastered some solid content writing techniques to keep readers on board.

Exactly. The only place I like long paragraphs is in a novel.

Thanks for the tips, that’s what I’ve been trying to do on my blogs is to get good content, but not seem to long.

You can continue on with the same thought for several paragraphs, just break them up.

Spot on Rob! I've seen some really good content blogs that are just too much text, no flow, and although the topic is well covered, I'm turned off (and I'll read anything ecommerce related).

Keep it as short as it needs to be to make your point or explore a topic, and your readers will thank you for it (by subscribing and coming back).

    Great Post Rob,

I often fall into the trap of writing in massive paragraphs and have to constantly remind my self to break them up for the reader.

I'd also add to the list: Use subheadings.

Sometime when you're skimming through a post because you're rushed for time or just trying to find a specific point it's easier to do so when you have subheadings to work with.

Large posts with no subheadings can be a real pain to navigate.

    Unlike yours!

    Thanks again

      Thanks Ben.

Subheads are good. Bullet points too.

Hope more people read this and listen to the part about short blocks of text. I don't like blogs where they write in one huge block of text, sometimes without even one paragraph break.

That's a good point. Shorter paragraphs give the mind a chance to take a break too.

Good post. I would add that writing articles that are timely and relevant is just as important as the style of writing. Try to find new trends and ideas and be the first to comment on them. Avoid writing about "yesterday's" issues.
