I really enjoyed Patti Stafford’s post on great sites for writers. Her top five included some great sites, but some of my own favorites weren’t on it. Here’s my own list of great sites for writers.
There probably isn’t a freelance writer who hasn’t heard of Men with Pens, but I’ve been reading it since before it was famous. This straight-talking freelance writing site is likely to light a rocket under your backside with its hard hitting, sometimes controversial opinions. That’s a good thing. James, Harry and the rest of the MwP team cover almost everything you would want to know about copywriting in all its forms, as well as ethical and business issues. Check out their post titled Are You A Snotty Artist? to see Men with Pens at its best.
I have watched Dana’s blog (its full name is The Writer’s Blog by Dana Prince) evolve as she took her first steps as a freelance writer. Several years on, the blog has great information for new freelance writers on places to find work, earning affiliate income from websites, writing techniques and much more. I look forward to Dana’s posts, because even though I am an experienced writer, I always learn something. Check out her how to write for the web series to see some of Dana’s well thought out posts.
I must admit to some bias here. Inspired Author was one of the first places I got published when I started freelancing and I still contribute to it occasionally. Owner Suzanne James has a vision to create a writing community where both new and experienced writers can learn something. The site contains a series of writers’ blogs covering topics such as short stories, romance writing, the art of writing, working at home, online tools and much more. In many cases the blogs are written by experienced writers sharing their expertise with those new to the profession, but there are also blogs by new writers sharing their journey with others. Whatever stage your writing career is at, you will find good information there. Check out the Get Published section for useful information.
This was a blog that I followed a lot when I first started freelancing. Inkwell Editorial, written by Yuwanda Black, has got posts on getting clients, blogging, article marketing, copywriting and other important aspects of starting a freelance writing career. The blog’s now back after a move to a new home, and I’m pleased to say that it still offers quality information for writers. The SEO Copywriting series is a particular gem.
Monika Mundell’s freelance writing site is a treasure trove for freelance writers. It covers freelance writing, copywriting, niche marketing, jobs and a range of other topics related to the writing business. She’s also got guest bloggers from within the writing industry, resulting in a blog full of thought provoking posts. Read her recent post on job bidding sites for an example.
Those are five of my favorite sites for writers. They are all great reads and have useful information. I hope you like them too.

Great list Sharon! I had forgotten Men with Pens. Yikes!
Some of these are new to me and some I haven’t been to in awhile.
Thanks for sharing!
Patti
Enjoyed your list, too, Patti. Inkwell is one that has been on my list, but went dormant. I’m happy to see it back.
*cries* Forgotten!? How… but… awww!
You know what’s funny, though? As I read your mention about being one of our first readers and then reading the other names of people I’ve been rubbing shoulders with a long time, well… I got all nostalgic. So thanks for that. S’good to remember.
Oh, I like the lighting rockets part. Hee!
Yes, made me a bit nostalgic, too, James. Must be getting soft in my old age.
But–but–I have a very good excuse! I do! I changed emails not long ago–and if it doesn’t come to me in email–it likely doesn’t exist. At least not in my little world. LOL!
I have now re-subscribed to Men with Pens using my new email. Yay!
The rockets are the best part!
One of the things I loved about your blog is that I never know what to expect.
@ Patti – Wasn’t coming to you!! WHAT?! This is… chaos! Awful! Did you not have withdrawals?!
*pat pat pat* I’m glad to have you as a reader. Again. Welcome home.
Even though this isn’t quite yet one of those “and then the student becomes the teacher” moments, it was fun to make the first cut on a list like this (thanks for that, Patti), and see that Men With Pens made it in the second round. Doesn’t usually work that way for me, as a newbie, as evidenced by several other lists.
Not that I wish James and MWP anything but the best. Heck, he doesn’t need my well-wishes, he’s near the top of every writing list on the internet, and deservedly so. It was just fun to have a moment in the sun with him looking at the back of my head for a change.
James and his MWP deserves all that acknowledgement. He’s been a friend and mentor to me, graciously giving me opportunity and guidance, and it’s much appreciate. He’s role model in that regard, and I’m taking notes. We don’t compete (we’re in different but overlapping niches; I’m fiction, he’s writing-for-money, which if you’d done much fiction you know is a stretch on that count), we compliment each other. He’ll be guest blogging on my site (storyfix.com) soon, and I’m preparing my sixth guest post for MWP.
Point is… this is what it’s all about, getting into community, sharing what we know and do, and earning a few new friends and followers in the process.
May we all make a list or two as we travel this road.
The great thing about Patti’s list, Larry, was finding a couple of sites new to me. I agree that it’s great to share our favorites with others and to discover some new ones as we do.
@ Larry: “It was just fun to have a moment in the sun with him looking at the back of my head for a change.”
YOU GO LARRY!
No offence to Men With Pens–you guys are great too!
Thanks Sharon. Hope mine was one of ‘em for you!
Certainly was, Larry. It’s the second time recently I’ve seen your site mentioned positively.
Thanks so much, Sharon. I appreciate it! I agree with your other choices, too and there are a few there that I haven’t visited in a little while.
So many great blogs = way too easy to distract Dana from work doing normal business hours and that’s why people see me clicking way late at night. Ha!
I was reading James @jcme before he launched MwP, too and I remember that it was a controversial discussion that helped me first find him. LOL. Shock! I was also at (and probably the second or third person to respond) during the birth of Niebu on Twitter.
I’ll have to mosey on over to Patti’s original post to see if there are any blogs I can visit before I drag myself back to work.
Cheers,
Dana
Yes, the distractions keep on multiplying, Dana, but at least they are good distractions. I remember the birth of Niebu, too.
LOL, you’re all making me feel OLD!
“I was there at the birth of Neibu…”
“I remember James getting torched by the WAHMs…”
“Did you know he used to be JCME?”
STOP! I’m YOUNG! Turning 7 next year, I swear!
Too funny.
Oh, and Larry? Cheque’s in the mail, man. Flowers and chocolate too.
Hee hee! Seems it doesn’t take long to become a veteran around here, James.
It seems really useful.
As a Chinese wholesaler, I always want to write articals online. Personally, I like share my thoughts with others. Wish you can share more useful things with us. thx.
This is why Blogging Tips rocks. One more advantageous post for novice bloggers like me.
Some of the interesting tips for me. Thank you Sharon. These are new to me and I am trying to do it.
