When I first started blogging, I had no idea what I was doing. After nearly 20 years in the writing business, I had just launched myself as a freelance writer. I got myself a website and someone said to me: you should get yourself a blog. It sounded like a good idea, so I added a blog to my website and started blogging about any and everything. These days, when I start a new blog, I do it completely differently. Here are some of the lessons I learned as a new blogger.
Choose A Niche
I know people are divided on whether you should have a blogging niche or not. All I can say is that I first started to build up readership when I picked a topic I knew and blogged about it. Because I was knowledgeable, I was able to sound authoritative, and I used my experience of teaching to explain concepts in ways that were easy to grasp. Deciding on a niche was the start of increasing my readership, a process that has continued to this day. There’s no reason why a niche has to be narrow. My niche is writing, which covers a wide range of sub topics. But it means that my blog is focused, which is good for readers – and for me.
Use SEO
These days, even newbie bloggers have heard about search engine optimization. Plugins make it easy to do this on a WordPress blog and even if you are using another platform, the rules are there for anyone to see. When I started, I knew nothing. It was no wonder that Google ignored my first blog for years. On the second site I blogged on, I met a buddy who educated me about the use of keywords. I learned to do keyword research before starting a new blog and to use relevant terms when writing posts. Not keyword stuffing, but keyword targeting. This made quite a difference in making my blog more visible both to search engines and to potential readers.
Reach Out To Others
When I started my very first blog, I was blogging in a vacuum. I wasn’t reading a lot of blogs at that stage and I certainly wasn’t commenting. That changed on the second site I blogged on, where I became part of a blogging community and discovered the joy of communicating with others about topics we were all interested in. That changed my blogging habits forever. Reading and commenting on other blogs makes you part of a wider community and helps you find new things to write about.
Invest In Design
If you’re going to use your blog as a promotional platform or as a launch pad for a blogging business, then it pays to invest in it. Think of a theme and header image as an interview suit for your blog. It helps to create the right impression and make people want to see more. I didn’t have any design skills, so once my blog started making some money, I reinvested the income in a logo and premium theme. It made the blog more attractive and appealing to my readers.
What lessons have you learned since you first started blogging?

Good tips, thanks! I'm about to take the plunge myself, after a few years of speaking about career change at conferences (head start on the niche/authority stakes!) It's the SEO stuff I shall have to bone up on…
SEO seemed like a minefield when I first started, Giles, but you soon get to grips with it
Nice post. Things I've learned are you have to be persistent and establish a posting schedule. This will allow your readers to expect new posts, and they will become comfortable with the format.
And always continue to improve your writing skills. This will allow your blog to evolve over time into better reading material for your audience.

Good tips, Rob. I must admit that I've sometimes fallen down on the posting schedule, though I do keep one in mind internally.
Great Tips.
I thin first of all chosing a niche your passionate about is very importent and besides that getting a unique theme is also importent. Getting the right keywords to rank for is also getting more importent for traffic.
Blogging about your passion can really work, Teen Blogger, as you need to sustain interest in your main topic.
nice post….
infact we learn these things over blogging time and they are really hard to get through at the begining but ya things like choosing a suitable niche and investing on design will help to grow faster…
Ironically, when I first started out blogging, niche and SEO weren't among the things people considered, as most blogging back then was for personal use.
These are great tips for new bloggers especially if they really want to get readers and earn revenue.
Lyna, I was so lucky to meet the person who introduced me to the concept of SEO and niches as it has made a great difference to the success of my blog.
Great post.Nice to now about all these things.Niche should be one which we can write and should never change after selecting one
However, you can tweak your niche as you see what people are commenting on and searching for.
Great post
I hope this will help me start a better blog in the coming few days
thanks for the tips though!
Truly appreciated.I just started blog. It was nice tutorial to me.I learn new things here to apply in my own way. Thanks mate.
i have recently started my site Learn-a2z, i am looking out ways for promoting my site and this article is a good starting point.
Nice post, you made some interesting points. Personally I believe that keyword research is what matters the most. Back links are important aswell but they're a bit useless if you don't target good keywords that are profitable.
If you write your content and target profitable keywords, in time you will start to rank for them on google. And the money will be there
Cheers
Just what I needed, I have personally been all over the place with my blog. Now I will try to focus, focus , focus and I really need to use what I know about SEO, cause I sure don't. I have major problems with my scheduling too, haven't written a new post in 2 weeks, arrgh!
Thanks!
Nice Info. I was also doing the same on my first blog
