Pointing Your Blog In The Right Direction Spells Success

Posted by on 11th Oct 2009 Promote your blog 6 comments

blogging There are still people out there that think Internet advertising is some kind of smoke and mirrors show and that search engine optimization is about as important and critical to a blog’s development as the Rubuk’s Cube was to quantum physics. A bad metaphor maybe but you can see where this article is going. You need to promote your blog to make sure that it gets seen. Leave it sitting without working away at some kind of Internet advertising and it parks on the soft shoulder of the Information Highway. There, that’s better.

And there are the people that know this and understand the need for some kind of advertising, but for other people terms like keywords and links are things that sound like things they think they know but cant really be sure of. Still there are a few things that you can do to get your blog some exposure even if you’re not especially interested in getting the best Google rankings or looking to study all the analytics that surround your website traffic.

  1. Try to exchange links with people that write about the same things that you do. Remember that getting links is one of the best ways to get more people to visit your site and getting known within that specific niche where your blog is situated is a great way for you to get known among like minded people. And getting links is a great way to let the search engine crawlers know that you’re out there. Just keep in mind that you need to be somewhat selective about the kind of links that you ask for. The Google crawlers know a bad site from a reputable one.
  2. Of course you need to find a specific topic for your blog. There are literally thousands if not millions of people writing on every conceivable topic out there. Throw the net too wide and try and write about wide ranging topics and you stand the chance of reaching no one. Of course you might not be able to find a topic that no one has touched before but striving to find a fresh perspective will set you apart even in a fairly crowded field. It’s important to get a loyal group of readers so you want to make sure that you cater to a specific group.
  3. You want to interact with your readers once you’ve found them as well. Nothing keeps readers coming back more than when they know you’ll respond to the comments that they’ve left for you. It tells them that not only are you writing the blog but you’re also reading it and looking to have a relationship with the people who are reading.

While the Internet may feel like an impersonal race down a cold cyperspace highway in a fast car with the doors locked and the windows rolled up when you’re not sure who your blog is reaching, adopting a few of these simple techniques will slow that drive down to a country cruise you can enjoy with your arm on the window jam and a quick nod to passerby.

And remember, once you start attracting visitors, make it easy for them to come back with a simple RSS signup (feedburner), email subscription (again feedburner), and a design/layout that is easy to read and appealing. Often times great content is drowned out by bad design and no easy way to subscribe via email. I've found some nice blogs that do not offer email subscription, and I always forget about them.

Blogs are an easy way of earning cash as well as traffic to your site only if done in a tactful way
