I think you are right, the site that first reported michael jackson as dead traffic was incredible and was linked to from other people that reported on it. Although it is not a nice subject. It demonstrates what a fairly low traffic site can achieve.

That's a great idea - and really it's much more manageable than trying to relate your blog to current events. There's a lot of competition for being the "first" with the news, from a lot of sites with weighty budgets and expertise in getting that news up quickly. Sure, you can sometimes get ahead (as Sam notes in relation to a smaller site getting the news of Michael Jackson's death up early), but it's a tough ask to achieve consistently.

Upcoming events like holidays (or relevant conferences, festivals, movie releases, depending on the subject of your blog) are far easier to focus on. And I don't think enough blog writers really identify the links between events and what people search for online, when it could really benefit them to do so.
