Actually, I get little annoyed with those emails. Some are junks offering me something I don't need. When its time for me to deploy my emails, I will make it sure to put a personal touch on it. :-)

I am relatively new to blogging, so I haven't really thought about having a newsletter but it sounds like an interesting idea

We've found that having a newsletter with 3-4 topics, each one clearly marked, short paragraphs, bullets, and images if they enhance the message works well.

For our blog, we have a small section at the end of each newsletter that lists a few highlighted posts from the past week/month, with links to the posts. Gives readers a quick summary and an easy way to see the "pillar" posts.

If your audience is not on the cutting edge of technology, it's doubtful many use an RSS reader. Our web hosting clients are small ecommerce businesses, and only a handful use an RSS reader. Putting a few links in a newsletter to our better posts since the past newsletter gives them an easy to open door to the blog.
