Rob StarrSetting The Tone For Effective Articles

Written by Rob Starr from Rob Starr

ecommerce 2There are several effective ways that you can promote your blog but one of the more traditional is by using article distribution. As most people know who have a blog that they want to promote, articles are one of the ways that get the best exposure for the goods or service that you’ve got to sell.

And there’s been a lot written about the actual mechanics of the article. Google any of the instructions that you can get on the Internet and you’re sure to get advice on,

  • Making sure that you don’t hard sell your interest in the body of the article
  • Including the links and keywords at the end in the resource box
  • Formatting the article so that it’s easier to read

Now while all of that information is necessary and good, you need to understand a little something about the way the piece should sound to the reader’s ear as well. Too often, there are published articles that contain a lot of great information but read like they’re straight from a text book or instructional manual. Remember that part of getting and holding the reader’s interest is writing the article in an informal tone that’s more conversational than instructional.

For someone that doesn’t write all the time that can be hard to do. However there are some simple steps that will help break the process down.

  • As much as possible, try writing the way that you speak. Remember that there is flow to everything that we say and a way that we communicate with others that we’ve grooved over the years. If you can copy that in the articles that you write, prospective customers are more likely to warm to what you’ve got to say.  Here’s an example.

The Acme Widget Company has gained the respect of all of its customers. They all report only good things about the product.

This formal sentence sounds better in an article this way.

Everyone who buys Acme widgets raves about how much they love them.

  • Use Ten Cent Words Rather Than Ten Dollar Ones. One of the best ways to write in a way that people can relate to is by using simple language. Or, as the old saying goes..Why use a ten dollar word when a ten cent one will do?  When you think about this premise in terms of the logic of article writing it makes perfect sense.

The idea behind writing an article for distribution in the end  is to get people interested in the product or service that you’ve got to sell. People want to understand what’s in it for them when it comes to what you’re selling and that’s better accomplished through simple language.

Remember there are other things that you should keep in mind too so that the articles you write are effect. Using bullet points and subheaders makes it easier read and breaking the text up into small chucks rather than longer paragraphs makes longer articles less intimidating to the average reader.

  1. Very nice tips for effective writing. Flow and layout can never be over done. Make the article flow nicely (instead of a sea of words), lay out the sections logically and so they reinforce the main point, and have the end summarize and bring it home.
