Show people who you are with Hi.im

Hi.im is “like your nametag on the internet”; it condenses all of your profiles into one page. When you think about it, it’s a really clever domain name. You’ll get a page URL such as http://hi.im/yournamehere, which translates to “Hi I’m ‘Your Name Here’”. For those of you who have profiles all over the web, Hi.im is an easy way to share all of those profiles with just one link. Whenever you post anything on the networks that you connect, it automatically updates on your Hi.im page. You can even “highlight” certain links, tweets, videos, or posts that you want to bring attention to on your page. Lastly, there is a search function that lets you search for someone on Hi.im.

Step 1

What you’ll need to do: create a headline, enter a 250 characters or less description, enter tags, add a picture.

Step 2

What you’ll need to do: add your social network usernames for each site you’d like to add to your page.
Once a username is taken, it will be removed from the list. So if you have more than one type of account (like Twitter for example) you’ll only be able to add one.

Step 3

What you’ll need to do: create your “highlights” to show off external links; a title and link are both required.
If you add more than one highlight, they’re rotate on the highlights bar. You can view my page for an example.

That’s it; you’re done.

The Hi.im pages are pretty plain and simple – some might find them bland. Currently there’s no way to change your layout or theme. Your tags are shown on your page along with your social network links. Clicking on the tags will show you everyone on Hi.im using the same tag (if there is anyone). This is a great way to find others with similar interests.

You’ll also see streams for social networks such as Last.fm, Digg, Twitter, 12seconds, Flickr, YouTube, and Vimeo. Last.fm, Digg and Twitter shows your latest posts and is, of course, updated whenever you add something new. For 12seconds, Flickr, YouTube and Vimeo it will display your latest photo of video. Clicking on any item will take you to its specific page on the web.

While I like the idea of Hi.im, I wish it supported more social networks or just let us enter our own – that would really make it the ultimate personal profile page. Of course there are other tools out there that do the same thing, like Retaggr, ProfileFly, and SocialURL for instance. Keeping that in mind, what do you think of Hi.im and do you think it stands a chance against related tools out there?
