hugging_computerMaybe the title of this post should really be “Nah nah nah nah, Nah nah nah nah, Hey hey hey, Click HERE!”, because it’s time to get your blog into the world!

Blogs come and go, but you don’t want yours to be one of the ones that falls off of the face of the planet. Popularity comes in waves, but there are a few things that you can do to keep your blog on top, or at least closer to the top rather than at the bottom of the barrel.

One of the things that you can do to promote your blog is to get active! Get active online as well as in your community. What will this accomplish? When you get out into your immediate surroundings you’ll have more things to blog about and involve the local scene as well. While your socializing, whether it’s at a street fair or party or even bumping into people at the store, you can promote your blog and explain why your fellow Phelanites (the name of my small town) should visit your blog. You’ll have the local traffic covered if you get out into your community and you’ll spread by word of mouth as well.

How about over the Internet? There are several easy things that you can do to make your blog have a lasting impression on the web, and the simplest ways are to just get out there. Add friends to MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Digg, or anything. The more friends you have the more you can promote your blog and say “Hey! New post! Check it out!” Okay, maybe you’ll think of a better way to say it than that, but the point is that the more people you can reach on different social networks the better chance you have of connecting with a larger audience.

Already have more friends on social networks than you can count? Lets take a look at your city again. Many people say that business cards are “so old fashioned”, but by placing a business card in local eateries, businesses, and hip hangouts, you can generate more traffic to your blog and give viewers an exciting glimpse into what someone in their own community has to say. By having your site address on a business card and your slogan, you can increase views from people right in your area.

Don’t want to spread business cards? That’s okay too, but you should think about diving into the stone age, I mean the printed era and get your material out there. Print a few of your posts and leave fliers in doctors offices, the local pub, the grocery store, or even on a local bulletin board. When people can see things that they can hold in their hand, they are more likely to visit your site because you took the time to put yourself out there rather than just randomly posting a link to your site to anyone who will give you the time of day.

Anything you can do to promote your blog is good for business, even if it attracts evil commenter’s. All publicity is good publicity right? Besides, if you don’t like what they have to say then deny them access.

Hey Sweet, personal blogs are very similar to professional blogs. You can do the same things that I've mentioned above, but add a twist. For example if a blog is from the point of Henry ( a crazed lover of mechanical engineering) who talks about flowers and his gardening, then he would want to print up a business card that gave a witty line (geranium X race car = Henry [not creative I know but I think you can understand my point]) and a picture of a combination of formulas and flowers. Or he could make a half sheet of paper that just talks about his blog that is enticing, think of it as selling your blog rather than just saying "hi, I have a blog, it's cool, check it out!" Anything that you can do to get out there in the real world, that demands attention, do it. I hope that helped :)
