Keeping Those Promotions Simple

Posted by on 6th Sep 2009 Promote your blog 1 comment

Copy of ecommerce 11If you’re like me then you see all the technology that’s available today with a twinkle in your eye. And the truth is that I’m no technical wizard (I even wrote my first few blogs long hand on a notepad at the local library) so it’s not that I understand all those wonderful things that the Twitter and WordPress Plugins and other gizmos can do for promotion; to be honest I’m just hoping to tap a vein in the Internet that’s full of high paying corporate type clients.

Another Idea On Promotion

Still, truth be told there’s more to my ideas on promotion than that. The other day I was out in a coffee shop where I live and I started talking to a real estate agent that was excited to hear that I worked on the Internet writing what amounts to promotional copy. At the end of our talk, I walked him back to my car to get him a business card and that’s when the light bulb over my head lit up.

Right there I wondered if the Internet was the be-all-to-end all for business or just another way to promote existing companies. Especially in some medium sized places like the one where I live, the Web acts like an electronic business card to brick and mortar shops.

Electronic Business Card

Now of course writing optimized web cop is a big part of all that, but that chance encounter started me wondering if those of us who only deal in social media and web-based solutions might be missing part of the picture when it comes to promoting our own blogs.

How many of us have clients that are only using the Internet as the one means of promotion? I’ve had a few clients over the years that must have tapped other resources to advertise as well. Certainly not all the businesses that I’ve written for were exclusively web based. I’m sure there are clients that use radio and television as well to get people to go to their websites. How many times have you heard someone mentioning a ‘dot.com’ at the end of a firm’s name on the radio or television?

Other Mediums

That would certainly make a website or blog even more attractive when you can point other advertising mediums to it. And that got me thinking about ways to promote a blog that lie just outside the realms of cyberspace. We all know it’s best to keep on top of all the current technology so that your blog doesn’t get caught in the backwater, but what about getting some new traffic from older more traditional technologies like community newspapers and even radio?

Here’s a final thought. We’ve come a long way with everything the Internet has given us, and I’ve been able to do things that I could have only dreamt of before thanks to cyberspace. Still, We need to be careful that something doesn’t get lost in translation. Posting blogs on the latest social media is great, but a handshake and a business card can drum up some interest in your blog or website too.

    Very good post Rob!

It seems that with the use of the Internet we've lost that personal touch and what it means to be face to face with a perspective client.

There was a time when an agreement was solidified with a handshake and it was as binding as a legal document. These days that no longer holds true but a handshake does still mean something as far as greetings go.

In network marketing they teach you to have an "elevator speech." It's basically a blurb about what you do that can be relayed in the amount of time it takes to go from one floor to another in an elevator. It's used to answer the question, "What do you do for a living?"

It's not something I've ever worked on, but I definitely see the potential of it as a advertising media and promotional tool, and if you have a business card on hand–that would be the proverbial cherry on top.

Here in Branson, we have a little weekly publication called,

"Coffee News", it's written on brown paper and it's free. You can purchase advertising space and I can see where small, local publications like that would also be great for promotions.

Excellent "idea sparking" post. Thanks for sharing!
