I use several tools.
1) Evernote (http://www.evernote.com/) stores little bits of information to include text and images. These are synced from a desktop application or iPhone to the web. Notes can be tagged and searched and it can even do some text recognition.

2) Things a GTD done application. I can keep a history of the things I have done. Mac and iPhone only.

Well, it's really good to be organized with your things especially with articles. Personally, I save my old articles on a cd in case of any software or hardware crash. It keeps me safe from any data loss. Although, I still have some copies in my laptop which are sorted in folders. When time allows, I might try it in excel- sounds pretty convenient. ss
