Also things like if they claim to be green web hosting, look into it, just in what way are they actually doing their bit for the environment.

Regarding adult content, it's worth also considering that you may not want to share a server with customers who are actually hosting adult websites, if they allow the hosting of adult content, and you have a shared hosting plan with the provider, theres a chance you will be on a server with some of that adult content.

Theres also a chance that just because friends, relatives or a few dozen people are happy with any particular web host, it doesn't mean that you will be as happy with them too, you may be one of the few who experience a nightmare with a hosting provider.

I've been using Site5 for years. Although there have been hickups here and there their customer service has always been amazingly fast. I think this is one of the most important factors.

You mentioned the minimum requirements for Wordpress. Do you think that it is good advice? PHP 4 is no longer supported, so even if wordpress works on PHP 4, I think no one should signup with a host that does not support PHP 5 gophp5.org

Good post. I think one of the most important things to look at is how genuine the support are. Will they help you if you run into trouble? Personally I always tent to recommend Hostgator.

It is a tough choice because if you read the reviews it seems like every provider is bad.
