I haven’t done any travel writing (other than some local pieces), but the option has always appealed to me and is looking very nice at this point in my life and career.
If you do any traveling at all, there’s no reason you can’t write about it. Maybe it isn’t your genre’ of choice, but it can have its advantages:
Fun: We all want fun. Most of us love to tell about the great time we had when on vacation. You can share it in your writing; just add pictures.
Exposure: You can gain a lot of exposure to your blog and other work by using your travel writing as guest posts on travel blogs.
Networking: Getting to know writers in other genre’s is just good business practive. Why would you limit yourself to just learning and sharing with writers of your own niche? Travel writers, like other writers, are a special breed of people and have a pretty great job. Why not network with a few, learn tips of their trade and apply those tips to your own style.
Tax deduction: If you travel a lot and write about it, it can be used as a tax or business deduction. This is always a plus when it comes to tax time.
Travel writing is acclaimed as an exciting career. I’ve thought about it many times, but circumstances have kept me from following that rainbow. I might enjoy being a full time travel writer, but I recently learned that you don’t have to be full time if you don’t want to. This is something you can do simply for the fun of writing about new places and experiences, and it’s a great way to meet other writers and get more exposure to yourself.
Writing in unfamiliar territory is also a great way to improve your writing skills. I’ve been offered many assignments that I considered “over my head” or they just didn’t fit me. I’ve accepted some of them despite being a bit intimidated by them and discovered that it’s great writing practice.
Don’t travel? That’s not a problem, you can write informative pieces about things in your city. Just because you live there and don’t necessarily see the charm in what your city has to offer, doesn’t mean someone else from another location isn’t interested.
Whether you write travel related articles for fun or to improve your skills, it can be a fun and exciting way to share a little bit your world with the rest of the world. Why not give it a try?

I would love to blog about our travels. We spend about 8 days a year in Jamaica and I think it would be blast to blog about it. At first I didn't think it would fit into my healthy lifestyle blog but now that I think of it I'm sure I could make that work. BUT hubby and I have our own website too so I might just add a blog onto that domain and link to it from my blog. Hmmmm decisions decisions.
Travel blogging really intrigues me so thanks for this post. It really got me thinking.

I adore traveling and have done a few pieces both on and offline. Travel writing can be as simple as making an online blog journal of your trip!
I'm so glad this post found me today. Another encouraging sign from the Universe. I've been thinking of doing this a lot lately- even writing a book about my travels. I've spent almost 10 years travelling through 33 countries and I've lived in 5. I guess I have a few stories to tell!

@Caroline, I know exactly what you mean about the signs. They keep popping up for me too, which is part of the reason I went with this topic. The responses tell me that others have been getting little sparks too.
As much as you've traveled, you would have an awesome start for a travel blog.
