I build websites on a daily basis and I am always trying out new software and tools to keep myself and my work on top of the game. At the time of writing this, more from a usability point of view I choose to use WordPress as my favored platform to build upon. WordPress is considered a Blogging platform but with the amount of plugins and the flexibility WordPress gives you, it can easily be used to create websites.
When I am testing a CMS (Content Management System) the first thing I like to do is think like a person who doesn’t know much about the web but wants to be able to update their website. When first entering the WordPress admin, generally the first thing you would want to do is to add or edit a page.
In WordPress this is simple you choose add new or edit under pages this is nice and simple. If we take the same scenario and try this in Joomla for example this simply doesn’t work, there is no add or edit page in Joomla. Again if we try this with Expression engine we have the same problem as Joomla. If you try this in most of the CMS’s available many fail my initial method of testing.
Another CMS I have been looking at is CMS made simple and this does pass my test. It is not quite as simple as WordPress but under the heading content is pages and you can simply add new content (add a page) in that section so that is good enough.
It would be good to run this on the platforms that you use so we can put together a quick table of pass or fail for this one item. Of course this isn’t the end of the world if the CMS doesn’t pass this test but I prefer if it did so that I know it will be simple to use for both me and my clients.
What do you use as your CMS or blogging platform and why?
Did you go through any tests of your own or did you go with what was popular at the time?
Another reason I chose WordPress over anything else was the popularity it has with the community that follows it. If I am creating a site and I want a particular feature you can almost put money on there being a plugin out there that does what you want it to do already.
A point to note is that if you use plugins from other users make sure you test it first as not every plugin works the way you want it to.
There are so many Content Management System out there that I am sure I have missed many so please let us know the different systems you use to blog or build your sites with.

I started to use Wordpress for about a year ago and even though I still have a few sites that I’ve made by myself most of them consists of Wordpress now.
Why? Simple because there are so many plugins and free themes for it. I’m also comfortable with their programming and now how to accomplish things.
I’ve been using WordPress for 3 or 4 years now and ive not come across anything to make me change yet. As you say it is very flexible and has so many plugins available that it makes it much easier to update or upgrade your site.
You should try Elxis and try (autonomous ) pages.
It works very well !
Thanks i will take a look at them i have not heard of them before
Yes , I agree that wordpress is the most easy to edit post, pages and website layout. We do can improve SEO of our site with SEO plugin.
Ya wordpress is better option… hey cant blogger be good option too ??
I am not sure about Blogger as it it only a Blogging platform. It does have some good things for blogging but there arent many additional things you can add to it and not without having some knowledge of how it works unlike WordPress that you can simply upload and activate
I prefer wordpress as my CMS. Besides its popularity, it is flexible with lot of plugin. There are also some nice themes can be installed into wordpress. Editing, tweaking and customizing are so easy in wordpress engine
I use Blosxom to power my blog, and the OpenVMS file system to manage the content. Each post is a simple text file, which can be uploaded from anywhere via ftp.
I realize that probably makes me a dinosaur, but everything runs on an Alphaserver DS20 that I manage and control. No hosting company headaches, no bandwidth issues, and triple-redundant connectivity via my own AS.
Plus it’s fun to peruse my server logs and see how many Wordpress or Blogger centric attic vectors hit me only to be dropped harmlessly on the machine room floor.
That is a very unique set up you have and while it works for you something like that might not work for others. No it doesn’t make you a dinosaur far from it, you have jsut found what works for you
I’ve used joomla and wordpress to create sites and my preference is wordpress. The reason is that it’s very simple and you can setup a webpage in minutes. Adding content is easy and it’s just very organized. Now I will say you have far less control over layout then you do in joomla. You can pretty much tell site uses wordpress as soon as you open it. Joomla has far more varied layouts and some of the themes are incredible! With all that being said i still prefer wordpress for it’s ease of use.
I find WordPress to be better for working with when writing posts and building templates. i do sometimes wish it had more ways of including content such as images into the content but with a little know how it can be achieved. I find Joomla to be very frustrating when working with it, i wish they would think about how a user would use it and the way the modules work are a nightmare
I’ve been using TYPO3 mostly for the past 5 years and really enjoy the simplicity of Wordpress. Both platforms offer excellent social media plugins but for blogging, Wordpress is hard to beat.
I am using Joomla and I feel it is better. Wordpress also a popular and simple but I feel Joomla is unbeatable.
