Thanks dear! That was very informative!

A two-thirds vote is needed.

Two thirds of the community voted.

This is a such a distinct but perhaps often ignored difference between when to use and not to use a hyphen. Some people follow their instincts for where to put a hyphen. for example if there are two parts of the word e.g. twenty-five, we use a hyphen, but we dont use it when we write e.g. hedgehog.

Thanks for clearing up a lot of doubts.

Thanks for this one, Patty. Great presentation. I'm a commi-ted hyphen user (rather than a hyphen-user), and I have to admit, sometimes I'm guessing. I received a reader comment on a guest blog recently, and the only thing he wanted to focus on was my use (correct, in that case) of the humble hyphen. I have to admit, sometimes I'm not sure, but I love that a hyhpen can, in effect, interrupt a sentence for a clarifying thought or a side comment.

In that case, I'm told, there is a difference between a hyphen and a dash. To make a dash into a hyphen, simply use double dashes -- it looks like this -- and you get the same effect. If there's a true hyphen somewhere on my mysterious keyboard, I'm not sure where it resides.

Thanks again for a great post.

Thanks for this easy to follow lesson. This is definitely an area of punctuation I struggle with.

A great mix of viral and usual marketing! It doesn’t get much better then this. It’s really hard to make a commercial that doesn’t look like one and they’ve succeeded in doing so.

I use hyphens in the urls for my runway fashion blog runwayrundown.com . It's either hyphens or underscores right?

I wonder how much of the problem is coming from software as well. When I see some of the suggestions Microsoft Word throws at me, I wonder... who's right?

I've always thought it looked really ugly to hyphenate on line breaks, so I always avoid it unless I have to use it.
