Kristen NicoleTwitter at Conferences: Building Your Brand

If you’re using Twitter to further your personal or business blog and build your brand, then make sure you’re incorporating some of your brand-building activities int your Twitter stream. The easiest way to do this is to tweet about industry-related conferences. Whichever event you’re attending, tweeting about it will help you increase visibility both online and offline.

That’s because others attending the same event are likely searching the web for additional information about the conference, to see what the event is about, gain some insight on the type of people that will be there, and overall determine what their expectations should be. This is where you come in as a resource. As some people will even search Twitter specifically for information an upcoming event, having your content appear front and center in their search queries makes you that much more valuable.

Not to mention the fact that Twitter’s realtime blogging capabilities can really come in handy when you’re at a conference. It’s hard to blog on your laptop when you’re at a conference, so sending mobile updates through Twitter is the easiest way to share information about the conference. Share your thoughts, tell people which presentations you’ll be attending, and which after parties you’ll show for. Now people that are also at the conference can come meet with you if they’d like, or enjoy the conference vicariously through you.

This particular use for Twitter within a conference or event setting is nothing new–it’s a dynamic that helped make Twitter what it’s become today. But the adoption of Twitter for conferences is becoming rather standard. So be sure to create hashtags for your conference, so you or the event planner can automatically retweet updates that you’ve posted and Twitter-specific search engines can readily find and post your content.

Some basic key points to remember while tweeting for, with or about a conference/event:

  • Share pertinent information. Use Twitter to present yourself to others as a useful resource regarding the conference
  • Personalize the content. Sharing personalized content regarding the conference gives others an insider’s look at what’s really going on. This is appreciated by others.
  • Use hashtags.  Make your tweets stand out.
  • Redirect others to more information about the conference or yourself (or both). Did you take a video of the keynote speaker? Share a link on Twitter. You’ve helped promote the conference and yourself, with one tiny tweet!

More followers mean more brand visibility.

  2. Of course this will only work if you really did attend a conference that anyone would be interested in tweeting for. Other than that, points well made :D

  3. One point i would add to the above list is that "share your experiences" of the event.

Really twitter can promote your brand and business if you are involved in to it effectively.
